Idaho prep track roundup: CdA’s Leonard sets school record in winning state shot put
Coeur d’Alene junior thrower Grady Leonard put up a big throw early in the season.
So big, in fact, that Leonard thought he would eclipse the 60-foot mark in the shot put in no time.
It was a case of better late than never for Leonard on the first day of the 5A State track meet Friday at Dona Larsen Park in Boise.
Leonard broke the school record, throwing 60-7¼ to capture a state championship.
It came on Leonard’s first throw.
Athletes at all the state meets had to endure rain and delays.
A handful of other 5A athletes fared well.
Sophomore Mackie Morris of Post Falls took second in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 17-11½. That topped her previous best by nearly a foot and a half.
In the shot, Lake City teammates Emily Hernandez and Keara Simpson finished second and third, respectively.
Hernandez threw 38-6¾ and Simpson 37-10. Both were big personal bests.
Amber Mallet of CdA took fourth in the pole vault (10-6).
4A: Sophomore Whitnee Skalskiy of Lakeland capped a big season in the triple jump.
Skalskiy jumped 37-¼ to win a state title in the first day at Dona Larsen Park.
Katherine Ruck of Moscow was another area winner. She captured the 3,200 in 11 minutes, 23.60 seconds.
Other top placers were Josh Corgatelli of Moscow, second in the 3,200 (9:39.51) and Carlos Collado of Sandpoint, fourth in the discus (149-0).
3A: Jasmine James of Kellogg took third in the triple jump (34-5) and high jump (5-0) at Middleton High School.
James was the defending champ in the triple jump.
Teammate Kara Steele, the defending champ in the discus, took third (110-9) and teammate Kayla Miller Graybill (110-0) was fourth.
Justin Hofer of Timberlake took third in the long jump (20-8).
2A: Landon Chang of Coeur d’Alene Charter took second in the 3,200 (10:01.29) at Middleton.
The CdA Charter girls sprint medley (1:55.14) took second.
