Sweet Frostings becomes third Spokane business hit by a car in two weeks

A car slammed into a cupcake shop in downtown Spokane on Saturday morning, destroying the wall behind the front counter and ruining thousands of dollars’ worth of baked goods.

The car struck Sweet Frostings Blissful Bakeshop, which occupies the southwest corner of the historic Hutton Building at First Avenue and Washington Street.

No serious injuries were reported, and the business remained open while crews built a temporary wall out of plywood.

It was the third time in two weeks that a vehicle crashed into a Spokane eatery.

Sweet Frostings manager Jessica Winfrey said the crash occurred shortly after 6 a.m., before opening time. The shop’s employees – seven or eight of them – were in the kitchen baking, so no one was in the car’s path.

“It could have been so much worse, especially if it was during hours of operation,” Winfrey said.

Winfrey said the driver had run a red light before another vehicle crashed into his in the intersection.

The car struck the south-facing wall of the shop, pushing the wall into a desk and a display case inside. The upper part of the wall consists of large window panes.

Winfrey said both drivers walked away from the crash. It wasn’t immediately clear if either driver was ticketed.

“We’ve confirmed our downtown location is not a drive-thru,” Sweet Frostings said in a Facebook post Monday. “On a serious note, we are thankful NO ONE WAS HURT!”

The crash produced a cloud of masonry dust inside the shop, ruining an unknown number of cupcakes. Employees quickly set to work baking more to fill customer orders, while greeting regulars with their morning cups of coffee, Winfrey said.

The crash at Sweet Frostings occurred two days after a car struck Prohibition Gastropub at 1914 N. Monroe St. The restaurant was forced to close while crews patched a corner of the building and repaired a damaged power pole, but it reopened in time for dinner. The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

On Feb. 10, a woman crashed a stolen truck into Tacos El Sol at 3422 N. Division St., leaving her passenger with serious injuries. The Washington State Patrol said she had failed to stop when a trooper attempted to pull her over for driving in the wrong direction. The taco shop closed for the day before returning to normal hours.
