Spokane Symphony Classics 7: Vienna, City of Dreams
Feb. 24-25. The internationally celebrated Ahn Trio will bring energy and excitement to the stage performing Mark O’Connor’s Triple Concerto. Deeply rooted in Viennese tradition, Franz Schubert’s last symphony, Symphony No. 9, “The Great,” full of lyricism, is a masterwork that foreshadows the great symphonies by Bruckner and Mahler. Johann Nepomuk Hummel was regarded as the equal of Mozart and Beethoven. His take on the popular Austrian folk tune “Ach Du Lieber Augustin” is a fine example of the Viennese tradition to entertain. The evocative “Air on the G String,” from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Orchestal Suite No. 3, earned its nickname from violinist Wilhemj’s arrangement in which he played the entire melody on the G string of his violin. Eckart Preu, conductor. Performances Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.
