“A Child of Our Time”
The 65 singers of the Gonzaga University Concert Choir and 40 professional instrumentalists of Incendo Music Ensemble present a dramatic performance of Michael Tippett’s “A Child of Our Time.” Composed in 1939-1941, this secular oratorio is inspired by events in Germany: the arrest of a young Jewish refugee for assassination of a German diplomat and ensuing Kristallnacht. Tippett’s composition uses five African-American spirituals interspersed throughout the work to convey hope in the face of oppression. A pacifist message of reconciliation and understanding underscores the drama, engaging with issues of our time, and leaving listeners with a sense of hope and purpose. Performed in English with supertitles and projected imagery.
