Using Victor Hugo's classic novel as an outline, Lelouch masterfully deconstructs the myths of France and World War II while examining how one man (played by Jean-Paul Belmondo) struggles to earn personal salvation.

‘Bridges,’ ‘Exhale’ Deserve Applause, Maybe Not Oscars

Two of this week's major releases ranked among the more successful films of 1995, earning both satisfactory reviews and relatively good box office receipts. One, "The Bridges of Madison County," even earned an Oscar nomination for its female lead, Meryl Streep. However, the fact that the other, the African-American study "Waiting to Exhale," attracted no Oscar attention at all became a matter of controversy.

Well, that's precisely what I want to discuss. I sometimes think there's this person sitting in a room in some exotic setting plotting just what the whole world is about to obsess over.

The folks at TV's "Mystery Science Theater" have made a career out of talking back to the screen. This week (opening nationally but not in Spokane) they even do it in a new, theatrical movie. But please. They're professionals. They have training, and a staff of writers. Don't let their success tempt you. Don't try this yourself.

Make Time For ‘Necessary Space’

No contemporary art lover should miss "Necessary Space," an exhibition of paintings by Dean-Craig Derek Eliasen on display at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. Eliasen, one of the area's most talented artists, has obviously unleashed his imagination to create works rich in color, scale and one-of-a-kind design. His experimentation with paint and technique manifests the freedom of an uninhibited artistic process. The result provides fertile space to let the viewer's mind wander. And, although nothing equals standing in the gallery and taking the paintings in firsthand, hints of Eliasen's magic can be found at EWU's web site. Point your browser to http://www.visual.arts.ewu.edu/ info/new.html. This exhibit runs through May 3 at the EWU Gallery of Art in Cheney. For gallery hours, call 359-2493.
