Clarinetist Performs With Symphony At Nic

Sharon Kam, winner of the 1992 Munich International Clarinet Competition, will perform as soloist with the Spokane Symphony when the orchestra plays at North Idaho College's Boswell Hall in Coeur d'Alene Thursday night. This concert will be repeated April 19 at the Spokane Opera House. Kam will play Aaron Copland's Clarinet Concerto and Gioacchino Rossini's Introduction, Theme and Variations for Clarinet and Small Orchestra. If You Don’t Like Something In The Theater, Let Them Know

The other day I heard one of the most startling recordings of any musical or theatrical performance. It documented the premiere of Edgard Varese's "Deserts," a path-breaking composition for instrumental ensemble and electronics. Shortly after the work began, the audience erupted in shouts and whistles that intermittently continued for 20 minutes, at times becoming so loud they drowned out the performance, which nonetheless proceeded to completion. This took place in 1954 at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris, the scene of another famous demonstration during the debut of Igor Stravinsky's ballet "The Rite of Spring" more than 40 years earlier. To American ears, it seemed inconceivable that the decades in between had done so little to improve audience manners.

Thud’s No Dud With Meat And Potatoes, Barbecue Style

From the outside, Thadeus T. Thudpucker's looks like a hillbilly museum. Blame it on that goofy sign that lords over the southeast corner of Riverside and Browne. The three-dimensional still life looks like a scene out of "Grapes of Wrath," with the rusted-out vintage trucks parked in front of "endorsements" from Bonnie and Clyde and the Waltons.

Zephyr Hosts Flutist

Spokane audiences of classical music know Michael Faust. The German flutist has played baroque music in concerts at the Northwest Bach Festival since 1991. Sunday, Faust will take a turn into the 20th century with Spokane pianist Kendall Feeney. Faust and Feeney will perform works by Prokofiev, Messiaen, Verese and Reich in the Zephyr series. Feeney discovered Faust's interest in new music when he attended a Zephyr performance while in town for the Bach Festival two years ago.
