Uniontown offers mix of history, recipes

For a taste of the Palouse and a bit of history, consider picking up the “Artisans’ Cookbook: A Palette of Favorite Recipes from the Artisans at the Dahmen Barn.” The artists, board members and friends of the unique Uniontown, Wash., barn have compiled their favorite recipes into the little spiral-bound book, which sells for $17.95, plus shipping and handling. The idea grew from the potluck meals at the converted barn where resident artisans and board members share favorite dishes and recipes.

Economy takes toll on local restaurants

The economy, weather and dwindling cash have led owners of Le Piastre in Coeur d’Alene to close the doors – at least temporarily. Chef Adam Hegsted says he and his partners are considering whether they can reopen the restaurant, which featured tapas-style small plates inspired by Parisian fare and made with local, seasonal ingredients.

A massive recall of foods that might contain salmonella-tainted peanuts has the whole nation looking askance at foods once noshed with abandon. The lesson is a familiar one to those with food allergies: Peanuts and peanut products can appear in all manner of unexpected foods, from egg rolls and ice cream to chili, candy and chocolate.

Wishbone’s salad toppers meet with approval

Wishbone first introduced spritz bottles of dressing. Now, it has a new line of salad toppers that would never work as a spray. Bountifuls dressings are packed with chunks of vegetables and herbs, but little fat – “so bountiful, there is no room for fat,” it says on the bottles. Each dressing has 35 calories or fewer and less than 1 gram of fat per serving.

Orange Rolls real prize winners

Dolores Maier, of Spokane, was desperate to find one of her favorite recipes for a Dorothy Dean orange roll she’d clipped from the newspaper some time ago. What made this one unusual, she recalled, was that the rolls were topped with whipping cream mixed with brown sugar, and then baked.
