Country, be-bop, resort-style offerings for New Year’s Eve

Fashion wise, different cultures bring in the New Year in a variety of different ways. For example, fancy panties are de rigueur for folks in Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Venezuela; red underpants are supposed to bode well for love in the new year, while yellow knickers indicate dreams of money. Here in North Idaho it doesn’t really matter what color your skivvies are, at least for the most part.

Eye on Boise: Minnick concession Tweet No. 8 on ranking list

BOISE – Idaho Congressman Walt Minnick’s election-night concession on Twitter made history – according to Twitter. It was ranked No. 8 on the site’s list of the “10 Most Powerful Tweets of 2010.” The tweet, sent by campaign manager John Foster around 2 a.m. as Election Night stretched into morning, said, “Congratulations to Raul Labrador on a hard-earned win, and best of luck as Idaho’s next Congressman.”

Front Porch: Peaceful visitation heavenly

They arrived at 10:30 p.m., which is a bit late for guests. I opened the door and a gust of chill winter wind swept through the entryway. Somewhat self-consciously, I read a prepared speech: “Hello and welcome archangels to our home.” My husband shook his head and the cat slipped out through the partially opened door. After herding Milo back inside, I found myself at a loss. I’ve never spoken to one angel before, let alone hosted five of them.

Handle on Business: Star’s Pet Grooming opening this week

Oh. How does a person write something for the day after Christmas without it being anti-climactic? To avoid that, I’ll try to keep this dull today. However, Star Belcher won’t. She’ll used finely sharpened, high-tech tools for Star’s Pet Grooming opening this week in Unit H of Northgate Mall at 3650 Government Way.

Huckleberries column will have new home

This’ll be my last Huckleberries column as part of Handle Extra. When you next see Huckleberries, it’ll be after the new year, included in the weekend edition of the regular Spokesman-Review. The Handle Extra is going away at year’s end. Huckleberries has morphed several times over the past 26 years, beginning in January 1985, a few months after I joined the Coeur d’Alene office as a government reporter.

Meals on Wheels now delivers to elderly and their pets

There’s one consistent source of company in Gladys Melbourne’s life: her gorgeous orange cat Gabby. Like many other elderly, Melbourne is largely homebound. She lives in a one-bedroom apartment in a downtown senior housing facility and relies on meals from Meals on Wheels and from the facility she lives in.

Reminder: Don’t feed wildlife, enjoy them from afar

The view from my office window is almost always entertaining. We have bird feeders nearby that are busy all the time. There is a major deer trail that runs through the field below the house. This time of year they come through in herds staying close to ward off predators. An occasional squirrel can be seen using the rail fence as a freeway over the snowbanks. Quail and turkeys come through regularly. At night, skunks and raccoons leave tracks for us to find. It is nice to know they are comfortable being around us.

Salvation Army captain jingles 36 hours straight

He rang in the morning. He rang at night. He rang in the sunshine. He rang in the snow. For 36 hours, Salvation Army Corps Capt. Kyle Smith stood by his red kettle and rang his bell. By doing so, he shattered the previous world bell-ringing record of 30.5 hours. Smith took his post at 5 a.m. Friday in front of the Northpointe Walmart store and didn’t leave until 5 p.m. Saturday. He borrowed his 12-year-old son’s insulated boots and spread a carpet remnant next to the kettle to provide warmth and cushion for his feet from the cold concrete.

Take time to enjoy snowflakes’ beauty

The first day of winter (which was Tuesday) was relatively snow free across the region. In fact, the first three weeks of December saw less than 10 inches of snow for Coeur d’Alene with only 5.9 inches in Spokane. Because of a bountifully snowy November, seasonal totals are still nearly 30 inches above normal in Coeur d’Alene and 16 inches above normal in Spokane. The other day while snowboarding at Silver Mountain in Kellogg, I was able to shift my focus away from the big picture of snow amounts, to the “little picture” of the individual snowflake. Temperatures were nice and chilly that day, and I was able to see the perfect little white stars as they landed on my jacket.

Decorated Campbell House open for holiday viewing

A visit to the holiday decorated Campbell House is a December tradition for many. The stately old mansion sits a little back, in a far corner of Browne’s Addition, overlooking the Spokane River below. Walk through the heavy front door on beautiful, creaking wood floors and it’s like being transported back in time.

Gift to nonprofit group would make difference

It seems everywhere I turn, I hear of someone newly diagnosed with cancer. And it is not just the elderly. It is affecting the young, the middle aged and the physically fit. The prevalence of this horrific disease struck me recently as I sat in church thinking about two friends who had recently died from the disease. Both were men in their 50s.

I’m willing to eat crow with my delicious Canton lemon chicken

Over the last four or so years that I’ve been haunting local eateries with the intent of giving them a critical shakedown, I’ve committed to print probably more than a handful of things I would sooner or later come to feel a twinge of regret about. I look back now at some of the early reviews and it’s often apparent that I hadn’t yet learned the value of smoothing down painfully blunt snarkiness into more of a semi-pleasant verbal bruise.
