Jody Burns recognized for saving life

Coeur d’Alene Police Chief Wayne Longo and Fire Chief Kenny Gabriel recently recognized Jody Burns, a member of the Coeur d’Alene community, at a city council meeting for his role in saving the life of Michael Brandt. Brandt was the victim of a vehicle fire July 24. Burns heard the explosion from his hotel room and saw the vehicle on fire in the parking lot. He broke a car window with a brick and pulled Brandt out.

Lacking drive

Glacier National Park has a new way to get around the park, including traveling Going-to-the-Sun Road, and it’s free. Park the car and see the park. Three years ago was the opening of a new transit system made up of shuttle buses, with stops at hotels and trailheads. The project was successful, with 105,000 visitors taking advantage of the new convenience last year. A new transit center was built just within the park boundary in Apgar Village near West Glacier. This provides travelers from the Inland Northwest another means of escaping to a nearby, less-expensive vacation.

This time of year, shorter days are hotter

I was mowing and weeding my lawn the other evening when I nearly had to quit, job unfinished, because it had gotten dark already. It was only 8:45 p.m. What happened to daylight until 9:30 p.m, and how does it seem like summer is already slipping away? For you warm- (or hot-) weather lovers, the good news is that there is still plenty of summer season – and heat – left, though the days are growing steadily shorter.

Witticisms, choices are both in abundance at Caruso’s

John Lennon once sang, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.” This and various bits of wit and wisdom adorn Caruso’s walls on big, eye-catching placards made of neatly pressed black plastic letters. Perhaps they’re there merely to offer ponderous conversation points to customers, or perhaps they’re the senior project of an especially unimaginative typography student.

Dryness par for July but winds were strong

Seen any rain lately? I guess it would depend on what part of the Inland Northwest that you live in. While Coeur d’Alene has enjoyed above normal precipitation not only for the month of July, but the year-to-date as well, Spokane remains in a deficit. Rainfall from thunderstorms have truly been the “hit-and-miss” type this season, bringing flooding rains to one area while leaving other nearby locations bone dry.

Event keeps memory of loved one near

Six years ago, Sandpoint resident Jenny Meyer sat with her daughter, Grace, on Sandpoint’s Long Bridge cheering as people walked, ran, rolled and strolled their way from Sandpoint’s Dog Beach to the south end of the bridge and back. The event was the first Celebrate Life Fun Run/Walk – a fundraiser started by Meyer’s sister, Julie Walkington, and her friend and co-worker January Tuinstra to help those like Meyer who were fighting cancer.

Gardening in hot weather is all about proper watering

The dog days of summer are upon us. With the temperatures rising into the 90s, we and our gardens are just going to have to hunker down until it cools off about the middle of August. Between then and now gardeners need to focus on keeping water on the garden. If you haven’t checked your sprinkler heads since you turned on the system, now is a good time to do it. Check for heads that have been broken or are clogged with debris. Sod can grow over pop-up heads and hold them down. Some of the rotary pop-up heads get sticky with age and won’t turn properly. Plants can grow up in front of heads, blocking the spray.

Off-road experience

Driving north across the Long Bridge into Sandpoint there can be no dispute that this area is one of the most beautiful places in the entire country. In fact in 2001 USA Today called Sandpoint a Norman Rockwell-meets-Ansel Adams classic. But just when you think it couldn’t get more scenic, imagine taking in the views of the mountains, lakes, rivers and trees from an aerial vantage point.
