Bullpups get long-awaited win over University

Gonzaga Prep pulled the biggest surprise of the young Greater Spokane League season by defeating defending league champion University 2-0 on March 28 at G-Prep. Junior Selena Rima pitched a three-hitter and struck out 17 in what first-year coach Eric Ptolemy heard was the Bullpups’ first win over the Titans in 13 years.

Spokane Chiefs were ready to face anyone in next round

PORTLAND – The Spokane Chiefs prepared for the Western Hockey League Western Conference semifinals with a general, not a specific, approach. The Chiefs clinched their opening-round series against the Tri-City Americans on Saturday night, then waited 96 hours to learn their semifinal opponent. Kelowna’s overtime victory over Seattle on Wednesday night set up a best-of-seven conference semifinal between the Chiefs and the Portland Winterhawks, starting today at Veterans Memorial Coliseum and Saturday at the Rose Garden.

Chiefs ready for anyone

The Spokane Chiefs clinched their opening-round series against the Tri-City Americans on Saturday night, then waited 96 hours to learn their semifinal opponent. Alessio Bertaggia’s time with the Spokane Chiefs will be short and sweet. The Chiefs acquired the 19-year-old left wing in a trade with the Brandon Wheat Kings on Jan. 10, but he’s not expected back for his 20-year-old season.

KENNEWICK – The other Western Conference playoffs teams will continue to battle it out while the Spokane Chiefs rest and wait. The Chiefs became the first Western Hockey League team from the West to clinch a spot in the second round Saturday night when Eric Williams stopped 36 shots and captain Brenden Kichton had one goal and one assist during a 3-1 win over the Tri-City Americans at the Toyota Center.
