U-Hi coach Jon Schuh, daughter Karly set for last state trip together

Jon Schuh occasionally thinks that he should have introduced himself twice to people connected with University High softball: once as coach of the team and once as parent of one of the players. Schuh’s Titans are preparing for their 10th state tournament appearance since he took over the program in 2000. U-Hi (18-5) will open against Bainbridge at 9 a.m. Friday at Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey.

When Vanessa Shippy comes to bat, it’s a safe bet that she’ll soon be standing at second base. Shippy, Lake City’s junior leadoff hitter, is batting .771 (64 for 83) and has an on-base percentage of .804 heading into this morning’s 5A State softball opener at Ramsey Park in Coeur d’Alene.

Hannah Beloved’s best game of the season was not her favorite game. Beloved’s softball coach at Mead, Joel Shawen, and rival coach Joe Stanton both raved after Beloved pitched a three-hitter and struck out 11 in a 2-0 loss to Central Valley at last week’s District 8 4A title game.

Sophomore call-up sparks Mead in district softball

Try to top this for a varsity debut: going 4 for 4 with the winning RBI during a winner-to-regional game. That’s what Mead sophomore Erin Kautzman accomplished during Friday’s 4-3 win over Lewis and Clark to complete the District 8 4A softball tournament at Whitworth University.

CV, U-Hi district softball champs

Pitching was the main winner Thursday as Central Valley and University claimed district softball titles at Whitworth. CV’s Carli Riordan (9-2) won the 4A title game 2-0 and U-Hi’s Brittany Hecker (15-4) won the 3A title game 3-2, but Mead’s Hannah Beloved and North Central’s Malia Wash were just as sharp. The four combined to strike out 36 and walk three.

Doomsday Hill gives separation for Deba

Doomsday Hill allowed Buzunesh Deba to transform the 37th Bloomsday from a two-woman race into a one-woman race. Deba, a 25-year-old Ethiopian based in The Bronx, New York, broke away from countrywoman Makida Abdela on the long, uphill stretch of the 12-kilometer course Sunday morning and cruised home for her first elite women’s title in Spokane’s premier race.

NC triumphs to claim share of GSL crown

Attention, all members of North Central’s 1985 softball team: Current NC coach Rob Kuehn would like to hear from you. Kuehn’s 2013 NC softball team joined the school’s ’85 team as the only two to win Greater Spokane League titles when the Indians held off visiting Mt. Spokane 7-5 Friday to close the regular season.

Carissa Sdao calls Brittany Hecker her best friend, but once in a while the friendship is put on hold. Sdao’s RBI single off Hecker in the seventh inning Thursday sparked a four-run rally as Central Valley posted a 6-4 Greater Spokane League softball win at University.

Lake City’s local dominance is starting to catch national attention. The Timberwolves (20-0) are ranked No. 3 nationally by Maxpreps.com, a first for an Idaho team, according to LC coach Laura Tolzmann.
