State 1A/2B/1B girls track: Emerson, Hunt guide ACH to second

For not having an official track team, Almira/Coulee-Hartline fared very well at the State 1B girls track and field meet. Powered by multitalented senior Katie Emerson, the Warriors, with two competitors, placed second at the three-day meet, which wrapped up Saturday at Eastern Washington University’s Roos Field.

State softball: Brooke Olson, Kaylee Levien boost state-bound North Central

North Central’s softball team took its lumps last year with a new battery of freshman pitcher Brooke Olson and sophomore catcher Kaylee Levien. Late in the season, following a nine-game losing streak, the Indians had a record of 4-14 and looked nothing like the 2013 team that won the Greater Spokane League championship.

Prep softball: North Central seniors enter home stretch

The last thing Jessica Huffman expected when she transferred to North Central was to become part of a unique group in school history. Huffman and fellow seniors Hannah George, Abby Nelson and Alycia Patterson are the final holdovers from the 2013 team that won the first Greater Spokane League fastpitch softball title in NC history.

Vikings hope to send coach out in style

Larry Bieber approaches his final games as Coeur d’Alene’s head softball coach with just a tinge of sadness. “I’m a little sentimental, but this is the time,” said the 21-year coach, the only fastpitch coach the Vikings have known. “My wife has been a softball widow for a long time.”

Prep softball: Kylie Sweeney leads Deer Park in tough Northeast A League

Shadle Park’s softball coaches were chitchatting about area teams recently when one mentioned Class 1A Deer Park’s win over North Central of the Greater Spokane League. DP junior Kylie Sweeney, who pitched a five-hitter and homered during that 11-0 win at NC, can see why the outcome might have struck GSL coaches as odd.

Softball notes: NWC’s Mackenzi Gray proved natural talent

Northwest Christian senior Mackenzi Gray more or less walked directly onto the softball field and became a premier player. Gray had never played competitively when she turned out for the team as a freshman. The Crusaders gave Gray a look in the outfield before moving her to shortstop, a position she has held since.

Jaya Allen craves the big moments in softball games, so Friday was right up her alley.
