Chiefs, Silvertips getting physical as Game 3 looms

What’s shaping up as the Western Conference’s most intriguing first-round playoff series has also been the most contentious. The Spokane Chiefs and Everett Silvertips piled up infractions and penalty minutes at an astonishing rate through the first two games at Everett’s Xfinity Arena. The Western Hockey League best-of-7 postseason series, matching the second-seeded Silvertips and the seventh- seeded Chiefs, is tied at 1 headed into tonight’s game at the Arena.

Chiefs rebound, pull even with Silvertips

EVERETT – Any carryover effect that the Everett Silvertips had from winning Game 1 on Friday night disappeared Saturday during a first-period sequence of less than 6 minutes. The Spokane Chiefs erupted for four goals in 5:46 – two by regular-season scoring leader Adam Helewka – and steamrolled the Silvertips 6-2 at Xfinity Arena to tie the best-of-7 Western Hockey League first-round series at 1 win apiece.

Big third period lifts Everett over Chiefs in Game 1

EVERETT – The third period had barely started Friday night when Carson Stadnyk made it known that he wasn’t going to stand for the Spokane Chiefs’ 1-0 lead. Stadnyk scored 17 seconds into the final period and added two goals during the next 3:46 as the Everett Silvertips drew first blood in their best-of-7 Western Hockey League first-round series against the Chiefs with a 5-1 victory at Xfinity Arena.

Chiefs must forget, move on to Game 2

The best strategy for the Spokane Chiefs heading in to Game 2 of the Western Hockey League playoffs is to toss away the memory of Everett's five-goal third period Friday night. Read story

Chiefs need all hands on deck

There are better ways to head into postseason play than dragging along a five-game losing streak. But the Spokane Chiefs aren’t shrinking from the task of meeting U.S. Division champion Everett in the first round of the Western Hockey League playoffs.

It’s almost over for overage Chiefs

The Spokane Chiefs’ 20-year-old players will complete their Western Hockey League careers at the same place, but they took vastly different routes to reach that spot. The beginning of the end for right wing Jackson Playfair and centers Calder Brooks and Liam Stewart starts tonight at Xfinity Arena as Everett hosts Game 1 of a best-of-seven Western Conference first-round series.

Twin connection: Identical duo’s versatility aids Shadle Park softball

Shadle Park was playing Ferris in a Greater Spokane League softball game last season when a Saxons base runner fell into the Highlanders’ Twin Trap. Shadle catcher Leslie Jones, using the unspoken vibe that links identical twins, snapped a throw to third baseman Laurie Jones, who applied the tag on the shocked Saxon.

Jaya Allen strikes out 12 as Shadle Park tops Mt. Spokane in GSL opener

Jaya Allen’s pitching made up for any shortcomings Shadle Park displayed during Tuesday’s Greater Spokane League softball opener at Mt. Spokane. Allen struck out 12 and worked out of big jams in the sixth and seventh innings as the Highlanders, last year’s third-place team at the State 3A tournament, held off the Wildcats 7-4 on a blustery afternoon.

Chiefs lose; most stars rest

The Western Hockey League regular season came to an end Sunday at the Arena with a playoff preview that wasn’t really indicative of anything. The Everett Silvertips, less than 24 hours after winning their first U.S. Division title since 2007, edged the Spokane Chiefs 5-4 in a game that wasn’t that close and lacked star power on both sides.

It didn’t matter much, but it still hurt

The Spokane Chiefs can't move up or down in the WHL standings in their final regular-season games, but Friday's 7-2 loss to Seattle still left a bad taste in the mouth with the postseason approaching. Read story

Gropp scores four goals in T-Birds’ win over Chiefs

You wouldn’t know it by Friday night’s lopsided 7-2 score – which came courtesy of Ryan Gropp’s four goals – but the victorious Seattle Thunderbirds and vanquished Spokane Chiefs are in the same boat. Both teams are waiting to see if they’ll open the Western Hockey League playoffs next weekend against the Everett Silvertips or the Portland Winterhawks.

Portland’s Adam Henry too much for Chiefs

Adam Henry knows he struck gold as his days in the Western Hockey League wind down. Henry spent half of this season with the Saskatoon Blades, who have the worst record in the league. Before the trade deadline the Blades dealt him to the potent Portland Winterhawks, who appear poised to make a deep postseason run.
