Wild Card/Tuesday — 7.12.16

I dreamed last night that my old high school English teacher was bedeviling me again. The guy was arrogant. He enjoyed belittling freshmen and sophomores. I was a favorite target. He didn't like the books I read for assignments. He didn't like my essays. I don't think he liked me. Last night, in my dream, he made a commotion about a poem I wrote.

County to expand jail w/fund balance

Kootenai County has trimmed its jail expansion proposal from $15.7M to $11.7M, and plans to fund it with a $37M fund balance. The balance will allow the county to expand the jail and construct other projects without raising taxes or requiring a public vote.

City won’t sell Blackwell acreage

The City of Coeur d’Alene has determined that property owned on Blackwell Island is not surplus and won’t be sold. As part of the City Hall remodel project, the City surveyed all of the property it owns to determine if it may be surplus and sold to offset the cost of the remodel. The Blackwell Island property is not considered surplus.

Idaho among lowest for child deaths

Idaho ranks No. 41 in the nation for child deaths, meaning that the state has one of the lowest child death rates in the country. The leading causes of death among Idaho infants are physical birth defects and short gestation periods or low birth weight. The leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 17 are general accidents and suicides.

Idaho gas prices lower, but …

Idaho’s gas prices are the eighth-highest in the nation, 24 cents over the national average, reports AAA of Idaho. But they’re also running 59 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, are at the lowest level for July since 2005, and have been stable – within a penny or so of their current $2.47 average – all summer.

Sightem (Pokemon Go)

Walking partner Greg Lee and I counted 39 millennials (and Tom Greene of North Idaho College) doing Pokémon Go walkabouts in McEuen Park, City Beach and elsewhere on the waterfront during our noon walk. They were easy to spot. Almost all had their head down, looking at their cellphones. Their ages ranged from early teen to mid-20s.

OOST: Weed out confused codgers

Out of Stater Tater is sticking by his guns re: the need to keep us codgers from causing too many driving problems. Starbucks hiking coffee, espresso, latte prices

Starbucks says it's increasing prices slightly on brewed coffee, espresso and tea latte beverages. The Seattle-based coffee chain says prices on select sizes of brewed coffee in U.S. company-operated stores are jumping 10 to 20 cents Tuesday, while prices on espresso and tea latte beverages will rise 10 to 30 cents.
