Restaurant owner apologizes, reconciles w/disabled vet

Ben Votava, owner of the Nordman restaurant in the Priest Lake area, and Scott Yockum have reconciled re: a disagreement over Yockum's service dog, Daisy. Votava had refused to serve the disabled veteran as a result of the dog. Votava bought Yockum and beer and apologized. Yockum accepted the apology.

Task force statement on shootings

The Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations has issued a statement re: the shootings in Dallas, Texas, Baton Rouge, La., and St. Anthony, Minn. The task force, which originated as a response to the Aryan Nations, is calling for this country to turn away from violence and return to civil discourse.

Gunmen shot and killed five police officers and wounded seven others during a protest over fatal police shootings of black men in other states, authorities said. It appeared to be the deadliest day for U.S. law enforcement since the 2001 terrorist attacks.

In his editorial today, Opinion Editor Marty Trillhaase of the Lewiston Tribune comments on the defiant pose struck by Ron Miller, president of Rocky Mountain Mining Rights. Miller is ready to take on the feds again re: suction dredge mining. Trillhaase reminds Miller that there may be consequences to doing that, now that the Bundy era is over.

Washington bathroom initiative dead

Voters will not get a chance this fall to decide whether to keep or cancel a state rule allowing transgender people to use bathrooms and other public facilities based on gender identity, not biology. Sponsors of Initiative 1515 notified state elections officials late Thursday they will not turn in their petitions before Friday’s deadline.

Today is garbage collection day in the Borah Triangle -- or not. If we're going according to the old Waste Management schedule, we won't have garbage service until Friday, due to the 4th of July holiday. Tubbs Hill fall injures boy

At about 12:30 p.m. today, a boy enjoying Tubbs Hill slipped on the rocks above the water and fell to the rocks below. Fire crews provided medical aid and transported the patient via fireboat to the ambulance waiting at Third Street dock. Then, he was taken to Kootenai Health, and a level 1 trauma alert was called to the hospital.
