Couple’s key to bike safety is preparation

After a strong ride with a weekly group, Janet and David Merriman pedaled home, with a detour to check on a friend’s house they were watching. As dusk gathered, they turned left on 16th, east of Sullivan in the Valley, taking it easy after the 25-mile run out of Wheel Sport East. They saw deer grazing off to the right as a car approached. Suddenly a fawn darted from the left into the path of the car.

Older cyclists find ways to compensate

Try as I might, and I admit to not trying too hard, I can’t remember anything from the time my butt lifted off my bicycle seat and I knew the inevitable was about to happen, until I was sitting on my rear on the side of a Spokane Valley street. That was last September and the only other thing I fail to remember was a few days later when I was knocked out in the operating room so Dr. Jonathan Keeve could insert a plate to stabilize my left collarbone.

Bullpups top Mt. Spokane, remain in lead of GSL

The marquee matchup in the Greater Spokane League baseball showdown never materialized, but there was no shortage of heroes. Evan Weaver’s two-run single in the top of the sixth inning finally erased a five-run deficit as Gonzaga Prep, behind stellar relief pitching wrapped up by Cael McKeirnan’s two-inning save, rallied to beat Mt. Spokane 7-6 on a chilly Tuesday afternoon.

It’s hard to imagine that Colton, in winning 43 straight games, struggled as mightily on offense as it did Saturday night. But they don’t give championship trophies based on style points and with five straight 1B titles on their resume, the Wildcats kept plugging away.

Tekoa-Oakesdale coach Dan Brown couldn’t be happier to face Colton again despite the fact his Nighthawks absorbed 49-, 40- and 34-point losses at the hands of the Wildcats this season. “If we play Colton again, the third day at state is the place to do it,” he said after his team pulled out a thrilling 61-59 win over Mount Vernon Christian in Friday’s first semifinal of the State 1B girls basketball tournament at the Arena.

For playing barely half of a basketball game, Laura Stockton had good numbers – seven points, five assists, four rebounds and a steal. It’s what Gonzaga Prep did in the other half of Friday night’s game against Chiawana that really mattered in running its winning streak to 20.

Cunningham, Bears eliminate Panthers in OT

Yes it was cold, windy and wet Tuesday night but it wasn’t the fear of track practice that propelled Mariah Cunningham to have her best game. After scoring 28 points and grabbing 13 rebounds that propelled Central Valley to a 65-61 win in overtime over visiting Mead in a winner-to-regional, loser-out game, Cunningham said, “You’ve got to get to regional to get to state. This was just a game you have to fight. I owed it to my teammates to help out this time.

It was a trip they both missed last year, ending long appearances at the lucrative season ending Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association championship.
