Eagles fly past Bobcats

BOZEMAN – The last two seasons Eastern Washington ended its Big Sky Conference football season with critical wins over Montana State, ultimately leading to a share of the league title. This time the teams squared off in the league opener before 12,847 fans at Bobcat Stadium Saturday afternoon and the struggling Eagles' 19-10 win may prove to be just as big.

Eneberg energizes Eagles

BOZEMAN, Mont. – When the Eastern Washington University football team needed him most, linebacker David Eneberg was there. In the Eagles' 19-10 win over the Montana State Bobcats Saturday afternoon, the senior co-captain had a career-high 13 tackles, including a tone-setting sack early. He also broke up a pass.

Eagles, Wildcats both aim at turnaround

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Recent history, going all the way back to last week, suggests today's Big Sky Conference football game at Bobcat Stadium could be a stinker. Both Eastern Washington (0-3) and Montana State (1-2) are stumbling into the conference opener in dire need of a win.

Wulff says Eagles ‘underachieved’

With plenty of time to cool off, Paul Wulff was hotter Monday morning than he was Saturday night after watching his Eastern Washington football team's inexplicable 21-14 loss to Central Washington. "We underachieved," he said. "Our kids played like we were just going to show up and win. That was about as bad of football as I've ever seen here … just a true embarrassing performance. A lack of maturity and lack of leadership showed up."

Eastern falls to 0-3

All the answers to the questions about the Eastern Washington football team were wrong. Yes, the Eagles, looking to rebound after two tough play-up games, failed their test, falling 21-14 to NCAA Division II Central Washington before 7,943 fans in their home opener at Woodward Field Saturday night.

Eagle finds wings

The memory drew smiles. A year ago the Eastern Washington University football coaches were afraid their depleted defensive line would be lucky to get more than one season out of junior transfer Keith Grennan. This year, they're expecting an all-conference type of season for the imposing, 6-foot-4, 290-pound tackle.

Bobcats lick wounds after Chadron letdown

After Montana State beat Colorado to open the football season, Bobcats coach Mike Kramer made the rounds of the national talk shows. Kramer was glib, but his emphasis was that the upset would mean nothing unless MSU beat Chadron State.

Risks of playing up worth gamble for EWU

Eastern Washington University faces the biggest football challenge in school history this weekend when it plays at West Virginia, the sixth-ranked team in the country. That comes on the heels of a season-opening game at Oregon State.

Defense leads to two big Big Sky wins

The conference of quarterbacks and the resulting aerial circuses are adding a new act. The traditionally offensive Big Sky Conference opened 2006 with just two wins in nine games, but those two wins were big; Montana State shocking Colorado 19-10 and Portland State stopping New Mexico 17-6.

It’s live and learn

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Debacle is the first word to come to mind, which isn't surprising when your football team is on the wrong end of a 56-17 score in the season opener. But after a long bus ride, a little sleep and the torture of watching the film, Eastern Washington University coach Paul Wulff isn't looking at Thursday night's loss to Oregon State that way.

Mauled by Beavers

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Think worst-case scenario for the Eastern Washington University Eagles. It certainly was Paul Wulff's worst nightmare.

Beavers recall close call

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The question, as Eastern Washington University opens the 2006 football season at Oregon State tonight, is who learned from history? Today's 7 p.m. game at Reser Stadium is a repeat of the 2000 season opener, won by the Beavers 21-19.

Chance for new stars to emerge

The anticipation that comes with a new football season is a little different at Eastern Washington University this year. Instead of wondering what will be the next amazing play, courtesy of star quarterback Erik Meyer and his receivers, it's who will be making the plays.

EWU’s Cole takes neutral stance

Ryan Cole insisted he would be just as excited if the Eastern Washington Eagles were opening their football season against Slippery Rock or, in his words, Joe Schmoe. But they're not.

Seattle exits Cheney with warning about keeping focus

It was all Julian Peterson could do to stop to talk, especially when the rest of the Seattle Seahawks were all but sprinting off the practice fields Thursday morning. "I'm ready to go," he said. "My mind is already there."

Eagles take last opportunity to show off

Battles for second-team positions and spots on the travel squad were the focus at Eastern Washington University's final fall football scrimmage Wednesday morning at Woodward Field. "We really wanted to see what individuals were going to be ready to play and help us," Eagles coach Paul Wulff said. "We're going to have a lot of kids play in that first game. It was important for some of those guys to get a lot of reps today."

Eastern corners talented bunch

If anyone thought replacing mighty mites Isaiah Trufant and Jesse Hendrix in the Eastern Washington University secondary would be easy, that notion has been squashed in recent weeks. The Spokane Shock are headed to the af2 championship game this weekend, thanks in no small part to the play of Trufant and Hendrix, who joined the arena football team in midseason and spent the previous four autumns as the usual starters at cornerback for the Eagles.

Heller keeps fire going

The day after the Seattle Seahawks learned starting tight end Jerramy Stevens would be out about six weeks with a knee injury was the same as the day before for free-agent tight end Will Heller. "I come out here every day with the same mind-set," Heller said after practice Friday morning at Eastern Washington University. "This is a game people get hurt in, obviously. You have to be prepared to step up when you get your chance. That's kind of the name of the game – always be prepared to step up when you're needed. I'm hoping Jerramy is back as soon as possible. He's a good player – he's a big part of this team."

EWU gets off to solid start in first scrimmage of camp

Considering there are major questions at quarterback, wide receiver and cornerback, Eastern Washington University's first football scrimmage Thursday afternoon at Woodward Field went quite well. Though it was short of perfect, there were more positives than negatives.

Clearing the air

As the football careers of Eastern Washington University stalwarts Eric Kimble, Raul Vijil, Craig McIntyre and Richmond Sanders drew to a close last fall, wide receivers coach Keith Murphy wasn't panicked. "It helps when every two or three weeks a receiver was winning scout team player of the week," he said. "You're thinking, 'OK, we're not going to be so bad.' It was comforting when Tony Davis was named scout team player of the year. We definitely had something to work with."
