GSL girls dominate 3A meet

RICHLAND – Sometimes when you're the best, the regional track meet is just a formality, an event to survive so all energy can be put into the pursuit of a state championship a week later. Mary Graesser didn't see it that way Friday night at Fran Rish Stadium.

Guard Shives transfers to GU after year at Michigan State

Tiffanie Shives, a former McDonald's All-American and Michigan Miss Basketball, is transferring from Michigan State to Gonzaga. "I'm pretty excited about it," the 5-foot-10 guard said Thursday night from her home in Lansing, Mich. "On my visit I just felt really comfortable and at ease with the decision. The chemistry was great. I felt at ease with the team right away."

Down to the wire

There is something special about the 1,600-meter relay. It's surprising how often a track meet is decided by this usual closing event. Even if it doesn't determine the team champion, it often provides drama. The legend of Becca Noble was cemented at the State 4A track meet two years ago when she got the baton for the anchor leg 30 meters behind the leader and somehow made it to the finish line first. After that, nothing the Rogers standout did was too surprising.

Relay shows there can always be surprise in store

The 1,600-meter relay lived up to its usual drama last Friday night when the District 8 track meet came to a conclusion at Spokane Falls Community College. The drama was packed into the 4A girls 1,600 relay, where six teams ranked in the top 14 of the state were vying for four spots at this weekend's regional. That included the top three – Shadle Park (4 minutes, 4.02 seconds), Mead (4:04), and Central Valley (4:04.5) – plus Ferris (4:06), Gonzaga Prep (4:07.1), and Mt. Spokane (4:08.4).

Cheney’s Wilske scores four golds with socks

Maybe, as Bob Wilske insisted, it really is the socks. Sporting new white knee-high tube socks with black stripes, the Cheney senior made a home on top of the awards stand at the District 8 track championships Friday at Spokane Falls Community College.

O’Reilly joins elite

With throwers and jumpers doing their thing on the outskirts of the track at Spokane Falls Community College, it's hard to say they were inspired by Megan O'Reilly Thursday evening – but the first day of the District 8 championships sure played that way. O'Reilly opened the festivities by becoming the third-fastest 3,200-meter runner in state history with the fifth-fastest time, 10 minutes, 14.07 seconds.

Cantrell sticks around to claim second victory

Allen Cantrell figured he would run 100 meters and head for home. Then the Davenport sophomore learned he couldn't scratch out of the 200 meters, because rules would force him to also scratch the 100-meter title he won at Wednesday's Bi-County League championship and miss heading to the District 7 state-qualifying meet next week.

Teams move around pieces for best points

The postseason for track – also known as a chess match – is under way. But the real action started several days ago, when coaches determined what events in which to put their athletes.

Eastern wraps up spring by learning to wrap up

One of the critical issues the Eastern Washington University football team had to tackle during spring practice was identifying a replacement for All-American quarterback Erik Meyer. The spring came to an end on a blustery Saturday afternoon with the Red-White Game at Woodward Field without a decision on quarterback, but the Eagles did manage to tackle tackling.

EV, CV track finish 1-2 in GSL

East Valley and Central Valley gave it the ol' one-two Thursday afternoon during the Greater Spokane League track championships at Mead. The Knights won their first GSL title with nearly identical 77-68, 78-67 and 76-68 victories over the Bears, Lewis and Clark and Mead in the four-team meet.

Now here’s a switch

In theory, center was one of the positions up for grabs as the Eastern Washington University football team went into spring practice. Chris Carlsen could have been considered the incumbent since he started the second half of last season. But he inherited the position, he didn't earn it.

Knights have their day

East Valley track coach Dave McCarty was starting to receive congratulatory handshakes as Tyler Jolley stepped into the discus ring one last time. Then the Knights star spun, let out a blood-curdling scream and the discus soared over the heads of the volunteers marking the spot.

Hutchinson tosses PR in shot as Mead girls win GSL title

It's always nice to save the best for last and at a track meet that usually means a compelling 1,600-meter relay. The long relay at the Greater Spokane League girls championship meet at Shadle Park Wednesday evening didn't disappoint with Highlanders sophomore Brianne Brown gamely holding off an amazing charge by Mead's Nikki Codd.

Mt. Spokane senior Megan O'Reilly ran the third-fasted 5,000 meters in high school history Saturday at the Cardinal Invitational at Stanford. With a spot in Wednesday's Greater Spokane League championship meet at stake, Frieske and Bruton came up big in two pivotal events to spark the host Indians to an 89-61 win over Ferris.

Speed shines at Mooberry Relays

There are all kinds of long races, many included in relays, at the Mooberry Relays at Rogers, birthplace of the distance running boom in Spokane some four decades ago. The signature event is the Lindgren Mile, named for legendary Pirates distance runner Gerry Lindgren. But on a sunny Saturday, it was speed that stood out.

Peerboom has productive day for Eagles

Chris Peerboom isn't trying to be the next Erik Meyer, but he did a pretty nice imitation of Eastern Washington's Payton Award-winning quarterback during the Eagles' second football scrimmage of the spring Friday afternoon. The junior-to-be completed 8 of 13 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown and added a nifty 25-yard scramble for another score, putting a smile on the face of Meyer, who was watching from the sideline as he waits for next weekend's NFL draft.

Defense has Eagles coach Wulff smiling

Eastern Washington football coaches met into the evening Monday dissecting the afternoon scrimmage. With a dominating defense and a cold, biting wind marking the first scrimmage of the spring, it was definitely a day where technique meant more than results.

This year the Bonners Ferry junior was the one everyone was talking about and gunning for at the 45th annual event, but the results were the same.
