Apple Cup: WSU’s offense vs. Washington’s defense

PULLMAN – Tonight’s Apple Cup will be a matchup of strength on strength and the trophy will go to the winner of the battle between Washington’s defense and Washington State’s offense. More specifically, the game will likely be decided by whether or not the UW pass rush – No. 2 nationally in total sacks – can throw off the country’s No. 1 passing offense.

Steve Gleason to be inducted into WSU Hall of Fame during first half of Apple Cup

PULLMAN – Steve Gleason will be inducted into the Washington State Athletic Hall of Fame tomorrow as the sole member of the 2014 class. The unprecedented move of recognizing just one former WSU athlete will take place between the first and second quarters of Saturday’s game against rival Washington. “Steve is a tremendous Cougar and his induction Saturday night into the Washington State University Athletic Hall of Fame is well deserved,” said WSU athletic director Bill Moos in a statement. “With a sold-out Martin Stadium for the Apple Cup, I can think of no better setting to highlight Steve’s accomplishments than in front of a fan base that has admired him for so many years.”

Apple Cups runneth over for Pelluers

PULLMAN – Cooper Pelluer will be in the Martin Stadium stands on Saturday supporting his little brother, Peyton, to a point. Although his brother, a redshirt freshman, will be the starting middle linebacker for Washington State, Cooper Pelluer will be dressed from head to toe in the purple gear of rival Washington.

Jacob Thorpe’s Pac-12 football picks

PULLMAN – It’s been a crazy year in the Pac-12 and the against-the-spread records of those of us that make public picks are evidence of that. Think I’m just making excuses? Well for starters, visiting teams are still 29-20 in league games and the regular season will end with Pac-12 teams below .500 at home in conference games. It’s been a year where teams build massive leads and still lose, like when Utah led Washington State 27-0 or Arizona was down 31-13 to California and still won. The Cougars were up 21-7 last weekend and lost by three touchdowns.

Conference power ranks

PULLMAN – As we enter the final week of Pac-12 football, the conference's pecking order is pretty much what was expected from the beginning. Oregon and UCLA are at the top, Colorado is at the bottom and while there have been overachievers (Arizona and Utah) and underperformers (Stanford), most teams will finish up more or less where they were projected to when we started doing this back in August. Maybe the often-maligned college football punditry knows more than we think.

These Bears golden

PULLMAN – California’s rebuild is happening at a torrid pace whether or not the Golden Bears make a bowl game in 2014. Cal has already won four more games than it did a season ago, including three more Pac-12 games, and the team should continue to improve with the return of sophomore quarterback Jared Goff. But a bowl game could accelerate Cal’s improvement by giving the team extra practices, raising the team’s recruiting profile and giving the program notoriety for reaching the postseason just one year after going 1-11.

Allison gets a rude reception

PULLMAN – Coming to Washington State from California, Cougars linebacker Jeremiah Allison only truly began to understand the nature of the Apple Cup football rivalry between WSU and Washington after he played in one. In 2012, Allison’s freshman year, the Cougars beat the Huskies, 31-28. During the following summer break he went over to Seattle to visit UW receiver Jaydon Mickens, his godbrother, unprepared for the icy reception he would receive.

Connor Halliday leaves a remarkable example, high marks for future WSU quarterbacks to pursue

PULLMAN – There was an extra coach on the sideline during Ferris’ football game against Gonzaga Prep on Oct. 31. Saxons alum Connor Halliday made the 80-mile drive from Martin Stadium to Joe Albi after Washington State’s Thursday practice. “He was awesome on our sideline,” Saxons coach Jim Sharkey said. “He actually helped me out quite a bit when we were talking routes and doing some different things. He got involved in the game so that was cool to see.”
