Connor Halliday past misery, ready to rehab

All Connor Halliday needed to break out of the melancholy that set in after his football season prematurely ended was the suggestion that perhaps he shouldn’t bother trying to come back.

Ex-WSU defensive back Jordan Simone clicks with Arizona State

PULLMAN – For a year Jordan Simone stood in the stands watching the Sun Devils play like any regular student, trying to convince those around him that, yes, he actually was a member of the team. Nobody needs any convincing now that he plays for Arizona State. That is, if they don’t already recognize the potential all-conference safety.

No. 16 Nebraska surges after halftime to defeat WSU women

PULLMAN – A devastating scoring surge to open the second half buried the Washington State women’s basketball team, which lost to No. 16 Nebraska 82-61 in front of 853 fans on Wednesday night. After trailing by as many as 21 points in the second half, the Cougars pulled within 10 with 3 minutes, 13 seconds remaining. But the Cornhuskers scored the next eight points, effectively ending any chance of a WSU comeback.

Pac-12 Picks

PULLMAN – Rivalry week is still a week away, but a few Pac-12 schools decided to start early. UCLA and USC will battle to determine which school the rest of the conference finds more insufferable for a year, and California and Stanford will face off in what has shaped up to be a shockingly important battle by the Bay. Last week’s games seemed like such easy pickings until Oregon State played spoiler. This week features what should be a more competitive slate, except for when Oregon hosts Colorado.

Jacob Thorpe’s Pac-12 football power rankings

Week 12 was supposed to be the Pac-12’s lull before the storm, with no ranked teams playing each other, the divisions practically wrapped up already and every game seemingly featuring an obvious favorite and underdog. Instead, chaos reigned on Saturday. The aftermath is that every Pac-12 South team other than Colorado has a shot at the divisional crown. How does this conference stack up anymore? Nobody knows, but here’s our best guess. 1 Oregon (9-1, 6-1; last week: No. 1) Oregon was smart to take off a weekend that saw the teams ranked No. 1, No. 6 and No. 9 knocked off while No. 3 Florida State and No. 4 TCU had to mount furious comebacks to beat unranked opponents.

Pac-12 notes: Bruins turn in control of South

PULLMAN – Everyone but Colorado has a shot to win the Pac-12 South, but only UCLA doesn’t need help along the way. Here is how it shakes out: UCLA wins against intracity rival USC and takes care of Stanford then faces Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game.

Cougars ousted from NCAAs

PULLMAN – Natasha Howe’s goal in the 108th minute lifted Seattle University to a 2-1 victory over the No. 23 Washington State women’s soccer team Friday, giving the Redhawks their first postseason victory and first win over the Cougars. WSU’s season began and ended against Seattle. But while the first match was an ultimately unimportant exhibition win, the second was a season-ending double-overtime loss in the opening round of the NCAA Division I tournament.
