Pac-12 notes: Two two-way players set to collide in Seattle

PULLMAN – The days when a college football player was routinely expected to have an offensive and defensive position are long gone but Pac-12 coaches are rediscovering the merits of having their best athletes contribute on both sides of the ball. In the Pac-12 alone, talented players like USC’s Adoree’ Jackson, Washington’s John Ross III and UCLA’s Eddie Vanderdoes and Kenny Clark have shown the ability to contribute on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

Teammates paying visits to Halliday

PULLMAN – On Monday, Washington State football coach Mike Leach clarified the nature of the injury quarterback Connor Halliday suffered during Saturday’s loss to USC, saying he broke “the whole ankle” before explaining that it was the fibula and tibia bones in Halliday’s right leg that were injured. Halliday, the NCAA passing leader by a wide margin, was injured when USC defensive lineman Leonard Williams fell on his leg as the quarterback completed a pass in the first quarter of the 44-17 loss.

Halliday injury an opportunity for WSU’s Falk

PULLMAN – Mike Leach knelt beside his injured quarterback on Saturday and tried to comfort and relax Connor Halliday, because what else was there to do? The pain of a broken leg was enough for Halliday to contend with without the added anguish thoughts of loss and unfairness and the sudden uncertainty of NFL dreams must have surely provided.

Halliday hurt in loss

PULLMAN – The Cougars seemed destined to lose the game early on, but evidently that wasn’t enough. A second consecutive blowout home loss, one that officially knocks Washington State out of the postseason, in a mixture of swirling fog and rain that was surely designed in a lab to be the worst possible football playing conditions was only a small part of what stunk for the Cougars during a 44-17 loss to USC in front of far fewer than the reported 25,012 souls on Saturday.

WSU-USC notes: WR Tyler Baker emerges for Cougars

PULLMAN – No matter who the Cougars had at quarterback on Saturday the offense was going to be hampered without the services of sure-handed receiver River Cracraft and aggressive running back Gerard Wicks. But the spots vacated by those players, out for undisclosed reasons, ended up being Washington State’s two most productive on offense.

No. 1 UCLA defeats No. 19 WSU in women’s soccer

PULLMAN – Goalkeeper Gurveen Clair made an aggressive play in the 48th minute of Washington State’s match Friday against UCLA when a Bruins attacker broke through the Cougars’ defense. Rather than sit back and wait for the shot, Clair charged the oncoming Bruin and tried to cover the ball.
