WSU heads off to conference play with win over UC Davis

PULLMAN – The Cougars didn’t end the nonconference season with a dominant performance to springboard them into Pac-12 play. Washington State was too fast and loose with the ball on Sunday, missed an opportunity to improve defensively, and made it tough to distinguish between Corey Hawkins and his father, Hersey, a former NBA All-Star. But Washington State passed and shot the ball as well as it has all season in a 90-83 win over UC Davis.

Cougars handle SJSU

PULLMAN – There was only so much Washington State could do to impress against an opponent that would have been outmanned in the best of circumstances on Sunday. And it was far from the best of circumstances for visiting San Jose State, which suited up just seven players, including a conscript from the football team due to recent suspensions of four primary starters and the season-ending ankle injury to a fifth.

WSU women beat Montana State, improve to 8-2

PULLMAN — The holiday doldrums had no visible effect on the Washington State women’s basketball team, which overcame finals, sickness and the holiday season to beat Montana State 82-61 in front of 942 fans at Beasley Coliseum. Lia Galdeira energized the Cougars offensively and defensively, scoring 26 points, stealing the ball five times and chipping in when needed elsewhere with five rebounds and three assists.

Cougars sign talented defensive players from junior colleges

Washington State may not have a new defensive coordinator yet, but on Wednesday the Cougars added two football players who should help the team slow down opposing offenses. On the first day of the midyear signing period for junior college recruits, defensive end Jeremiah Mitchell and safety Shalom Luani signed national letters of intent to play for WSU. By signing early, the duo can join the Cougars in January and participate it spring practices.
