Manning to coach WSU outside LBs

PULLMAN – Washington State hired its second and possibly final coach this offseason on Saturday, tabbing Roy Manning to coach the outside linebackers. “Roy is an outstanding technical coach, a passionate recruiter and a great person who loves football,” said head coach Mike Leach in a press release. “He will be great for our players and our program.”

Oregon State’s defense clamps down on Cougars

PULLMAN – The tortoise beat the hare on Saturday, or rather, the methodical Oregon State Beavers chewed up Washington State’s impatient offense. Oregon State beat the Cougars 62-47 in a game that was played at a pace last seen in Pullman when Dick and Tony Bennett were coaching WSU. The loss ends a three-game winning streak for WSU (9-8, 3-2 Pac-12) that saw the Cougars score at least 69 points in each game. WSU scored just 16 first-half points against OSU and made just 24 percent of its shot attempts. Two nights earlier against Oregon the Cougars had 57 points by halftime in the 108-99 overtime win.

Cougs try to make it four in row today

PULLMAN – Washington State has shown that it can beat teams that like to get out and run. If the Cougars can beat a methodical Oregon State team today then WSU (9-7, 3-1 Pac-12) could be in for a special start to the conference season. The Cougars have not begun conference play with a 4-1 record since the 2007-08 season.

Washington State defensive coordinator Alex Grinch stresses turnovers in his introductory press conference.

PULLMAN – Before the ball is snapped, the defense implemented by new Washington State defensive coordinator Alex Grinch will look pretty similar to the one employed by his predecessor, Mike Breske, at least in structure. The Cougars will still run a 3-4 base defense and with so many young starters last season, the personnel will for the most part be the same. Where Grinch hopes the difference will lie is in the ability to generate turnovers, repeatedly saying that it was “imperative” the Cougars find ways to take the ball away from opposing offenses.

Washington State holds off Oregon for 108-99 win in overtime

PULLMAN – All week in practice leading into Thursday’s game DaVonte Lacy and his teammates joked about how they were going to score 100 points against Oregon, a team that likes to run as much as the Cougars. It turned out to be no joke, even if the Cougars needed an overtime to make it happen.
