WSU defensive lineman Xavier Cooper opts to enter NFL draft

Washington State defensive lineman Xavier Cooper will forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft this spring. Cooper, 23, is a junior but said he will take online classes to graduate in May with a degree in criminal justice. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound lineman played his high school ball at Tacoma’s Wilson High.

OAKLAND – Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins and Washington State’s Ernie Kent both have a tendency to refer to their first dozen or so games, the ones played against nonconference opponents, as the “preseason.” As in, those games are primarily to serve as preparation for the real show: a January to March grind when the Pac-12 schools duke it out twice a week.

Freshman Ny Redding gives Cougars true point guard

PULLMAN – Ernie Kent said he does not remember Ny Redding making a shot during the freshman’s first three weeks at Washington State, but that story is probably apocryphal. Yet many around the program remember the uncharacteristic scoring struggles from the same player who broke teammate Que Johnson’s record for 40-point games in one season at Westwind Prep and who averaged 29.8 points per game as a senior after transferring to the Phoenix prep school.

Cougars receiver Vince Mayle accepts invite to combine

PULLMAN – Washington State receiver Vince Mayle accepted an invitation to the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, Mayle announced Tuesday on his Instagram account. The annual event is an opportunity for NFL general managers, coaches, scouts and personnel to observe college football’s best players as they undergo a series of mental and physical tests over four days.
