Leach pal Dykes leads Cal against Cougars

PULLMAN – Mike Leach faces a former disciple this weekend in California coach Sonny Dykes, who was a wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator under Leach at Texas Tech. Dykes, who was a graduate assistant at Kentucky when Leach was an assistant coach under Hal Mumme, has applied many of those same Air Raid principles while constructing the “Bear Raid” offense run by the Golden Bears.

Cougars’ season given new life

PULLMAN – The Washington State Cougars may have saved their football season Saturday night, coming back from a 21-0 first-quarter deficit to beat Utah on the road. The win makes a bowl game path much clearer. Not just because the Cougars crossed off one win of a required six, although that’s certainly no insignificant feat on the road against a quality opponent. More important is that the Cougars continue to quickly improve thanks to talent that either wasn’t present or hadn’t manifested itself at the beginning of the season.

Cougars rise up, take down Utes

SALT LAKE CITY – The hole the Cougars found themselves in with less than a quarter gone in their game at Utah was too deep to even see out of, much less climb out with a big play or emphatic drive. Washington State gave up a score on offense, defense and special teams before sniffing the scoreboard and Utah’s points were pouring as fast and as hard as the torrential Salt Lake City rains.

Halliday passes Brink for career passing touchdowns

SALT LAKE CITY – Despite wind, rain and a heavy pass-rush, quarterback Connor Halliday overcame a rough start to have a great game for the Cougars, setting a school record in the process. Halliday’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Vince Mayle was No. 76 in his career, tying Alex Brink’s school record. His next two – to Dom Williams and the game-winner to Mayle – gave him the record all to himself.

WSU’s improving offensive line gets big test against Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – The element of time was added to the Washington State offense against Oregon last week. As in, Connor Halliday had all the time he needed to find his preferred receiver and make the throw. The Ducks didn’t sack WSU’s quarterback until the Cougars’ final offensive play, and rarely put him under any pressure at all.

Young Washington State DBs make an imprint

PULLMAN – During last Saturday’s game against Oregon, Washington State subbed in freshman safety Sulaiman Hameed, burning his redshirt during the fourth game of the season. His coach’s only regret?
