A good effort, but Cougars still have plenty to prove

In a small, underground room on the bottom level of their new football operations building, Washington State’s players and coaches gathered before midnight on Saturday and acknowledged that they had played a pretty good game, even in defeat.

Washington State upset bid comes up short versus Oregon

PULLMAN – There were less than a handful of plays in which Washington State didn’t play well enough to beat Oregon on Saturday night. A break here, a break there and the Cougars would be undefeated in the newly-renovated Martin Stadium and the Mike Leach regime would have a win that would resonate long after he finishes coaching. But making those critical few plays are what make the Ducks the No. 2 team in the country, and what made the difference in UO’s 38-31 escape in front 32,952 fans at Martin Stadium.

Cougars defense has daunting task

PULLMAN – If upon opening this newspaper’s Sunday edition readers discover that Washington State has beaten or nearly beaten No. 2 Oregon it will be immediately apparent, even before checking the box score, that Connor Halliday and the WSU offense played well. Oregon defense: It ain’t broke

PULLMAN – At Oregon, the novelty is a lie. Thanks to a never-ending cavalcade of new uniforms and facilities, the Ducks give the impression of a football program that is trying to evolve as quickly as its offense scores.

Cougars receiver Isiah Myers adds discipline to game

PULLMAN – There is nothing unusual about the fact that the current Pac-12 leader in receptions and receiving yards plays for Washington State – the Cougars have attempted more passes than any other team in the country. But it’s a little strange when that player has not been listed as a starter on the depth chart once this season.

Pac-12 picks: Utah takes big trip to Michigan

Give credit to Utah for making a trip to the Big House to make Week 4 interesting for Pac-12 viewers. The rest of the nonconference schedule is as bland as a beige rainbow. The week’s most interesting storyline can be found in Colorado, where the Buffaloes take on a Hawaii team that lost close games against Washington and Oregon State. Can we just decide that the winner of that game gets to stay in the Pac-12?
