No weekday games in 2015, except one

PULLMAN – Washington State will only play one weekday football game next season, two fewer than 2014. But the Cougars’ only non-Saturday game in 2015 is another Black Friday Apple Cup, likely a concession to television demands, one that makes it difficult for those East Side residents who must choose between football and the holiday. It was previously thought that after playing the rivalry game on the Friday after Thanksgiving in 2012 and 2013 that the teams would have a least a two-year period of Saturday Apple Cups. The Cougars will have six home games in Martin Stadium next season, including four against Pac-12 opponents.

The out-of-conference games took their toll on the Pac-12 and now that the conference’s teams are sufficiently beaten up they’ll start to play each other. With a 25-4 record in nonconference games the Pac-12 mostly solidified its reputation as one of college football’s top conferences. Still, it’s hard not to think that the Pac-12 missed an opportunity to really be considered elite. USC is still one of the conference’s most talented teams and could certainly win the Pac-12 South. If it does, it will make every good program it beats look bad in the process, losing to the team that lost to Boston College.

PULLMAN – The nonconference portion of Washington State’s football schedule is over and the season’s first third was largely disappointing. The Cougars enter Pac-12 play with a long and narrow road to a bowl game, but at least Saturday’s 59-21 win over Portland State established a starting point. Quarterback Connor Halliday looked like he was performing a skeleton passing drill in practice, leading the offense to a school-record 706 yards of offense. The team’s red-zone struggles were nowhere to be found with WSU scoring on all seven trips inside the PSU 20-yard line, six of them ending in touchdowns.
