Bye-bye to progress

PULLMAN – The Cougars didn’t seem to improve much after this past bye week. Maybe the next one will be different. The Washington State football team’s players and coaches insist that good work was done in practice during the team’s week without a game. But that doesn’t mean much if all those gains are forgotten when there are fans in the stands and an opponent on the opposite sideline.

Cougars slog through exhibition

Washington State’s 93-56 victory over Central Washington was a sloppy, foul-filled affair that was never much of a contest. In short, it was an exhibition game.

Cougars need to bounce back

With another long break between games – this time 16 days – the Cougars have to do more than just rest. WSU is still two wins away from qualifying for a bowl game and only have three games left.

ESPN a rare treat

PULLMAN – ESPN, the self- described “Worldwide Leader in Sports,” made its first trip to Martin Stadium since 1990 to televise Washington State’s game against Arizona State. Rece Davis, Jesse Palmer and Samantha Ponder comprised the broadcast team. “What’s great about it is that it’s a testament to our program and where we’re going that an ESPN national broadcast wants to be on our campus on a Thursday,” senior associate director of athletics John Johnson said. “We’re very excited about it and our staff and ESPN worked very hard to make sure it’s a terrific show.”

It’s Fright Night at Martin Stadium

PULLMAN – The cold weather and costumed crowd did little to stifle the Arizona State football team, which looked right at home on Halloween night in a 55-21 dismantling of Washington State in Martin Stadium. The game was never a contest as the Cougars dug themselves a 21-0 grave before finally picking up a first down on their fourth drive.

Cougars keep their focus inward

PULLMAN – The Washington State football team will take on Arizona State tonight. For all the Cougars care, they may as well be playing the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks or Pullman High School. The Sun Devils (5-2, 3-1 Pac-12) look to be the toughest of WSU’s four remaining foes, a fact that doesn’t seem to concern the home team in the slightest. The color and spectacle of the Halloween costumes in the stands will go unnoticed by the team, as will the odd day of the week and the late start time. According to WSU players and coaches, none of those factors will matter and the team from Tempe is just another in a long line of faceless, nameless opponents for the Cougars, who direct all their focus internally.

Do dual-threat QB Kelly and the Devils need the Sun?

PULLMAN – The Washington State football team won’t have to deal with the Pac-12 passing leader this week, nor with a pundit-projected first-round NFL draft pick at quarterback. No the Cougars face a far more fearsome opponent at quarterback this week: Arizona State’s Taylor Kelly. WSU’s defense alone may not be enough to beat the talented dual-threat quarterback. However, they may have a little help from the weather.
