Morning links: Paulo and picks

In today's paper we've got a story about Darryl Paulo, who seems poised for a big senior season. We also have my Pac-12 picks.

Darryl Paulo’s time has come on Washington State’s defensive line

PULLMAN – Like most college athletes in the days of team-sponsored meetings, meals, study halls and bowling trips, Darryl Paulo has found that his life almost entirely revolves around the team. Sure, Paulo has dreams other than football. He has passions for community outreach and law enforcement, and hopes to blend the two into a career with the FBI – he’s willing to move wherever the Feds might send him.

Jacob Thorpe’s Week 3 Pac-12 football picks

PULLMAN – If the Pac-12 can’t go undefeated against nonconference opponents this week, we may have to stop referring to it as a “power conference.” Only one team (Washington) is favored by less than a touchdown this week, and if one of the wealthiest programs on the West Coast can’t win at home against the third team in Utah, then what are we doing here? While none of the games is expected to be particularly close, there is some intrigue. USC has wanted to put Stanford back in its place ever since the upstart Cardinal beat the Trojans, favored by 43 points, in 2007. California finally gets its chance for payback against Texas and UCLA hosts BYU in a matchup of ranked teams.

Jacob Thorpe’s Pac-12 power rankings

The conference’s powers are struggling. Arizona State coach Todd Graham talked at media day of going undefeated, winning the Pac-12 South and playing for a national championship. Right now, a bowl game seems like a better goal for the Sun Devils, who were less than impressive in their 35-21 win over Cal Poly.

Pac-12 notes: Freshmen making an impact all around conference

PULLMAN – The players suiting up for Washington State have just a little more stubble on their cheeks this year. While the Cougars are still a somewhat young team, starting 10 underclassmen, WSU has only played five true freshmen so far this season. For perspective, last year the Cougars played four true freshmen in the secondary alone, and nine first-year players total.

Pac-12 honors WSU’s Luke Falk for coolness in game-winning drive

PULLMAN – Washington State quarterback Luke Falk has started only five games in his burgeoning football career, but he has already picked up two Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week awards. On Monday, the Pac-12 Conference announced that Falk won the honor, which is voted on by members of the media who cover the conference schools, after he led a game-winning drive in the last minute to beat Rutgers, 37-34, on the road. Falk was also Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week last year when he led the Cougars to a win at Oregon State in his first start.

In win, Cougs show the team they can be

PULLMAN – With a gutty final drive to beat Rutgers by a score of 37-34 on Saturday, Washington State showed it could push back and avoid a debilitating malaise from a bad loss. The team’s slogan of looking only at the game ahead paid off and the Cougars appeared to be a completely different team than the one that lost to Portland State the week before.
