WSU spring football: Freshman QB Peyton Bender makes his push

PULLMAN – Peyton Bender threw six touchdown passes during Saturday’s scrimmage, making Washington State’s quarterback situation ever murkier. Mike Leach engendered a competition at the start of spring practice by saying Bender and Luke Falk would be given equal repetitions at quarterback and either could realistically win the starting job next season.

WSU spring football: Cougars’ defense amps up pressure on quarterbacks

PULLMAN – When evaluating candidates for the vacant defensive coordinator position following the 2014 football season, Mike Leach had a general idea of the qualities he was looking for in the defense’s new leader. He preferred an odd-front – three defensive linemen with their hands down – and recruiting ability was a priority. More than anything else, he wanted a coach who would bring a lot of pressure.

WSU’s Ernie Kent signs two guards on first day of spring signing period

College baseball: Recent play has Gonzaga thinking postseason

PULLMAN – Although righty Andrew Sopko has been one of the most effective starting pitchers in the West Coast Conference all season, until last week he’d never started a game in the premier Friday slot. But with No. 1 starter Brandon Bailey battling strep throat, Sopko stepped in, and pitched masterfully in the 7-0 win. Sopko allowed a baserunner in each of the first three innings, but retired his final 16 batters and only allowed two hits while striking out eight in eight innings.

WSU spring football: RB Keith Harrington impresses, but must become more consistent

PULLMAN – Flashes and bursts are the images most appropriately associated with the inconstant nature of freshman running back Keith Harrington, whose coaches are annoyed by his inconsistency, but beguiled by his unpredictable running style. Such was the case during Tuesday’s practice when Harrington struggled to pick up blitzes, made little impact in the ground game and – a former receiver, no less – dropped a pair of passes during the “skeleton” passing drill.

Cougar errors prove costly

PULLMAN – Ian Sagdal blasted his second and third home runs of the season for Washington State but a slew of errors cost the Cougars, who fell to Washington 5-2 on Saturday. WSU (17-17, 5-10 Pac-12) still came away with its first series win over the Huskies since 2011, thanks to wins on Thursday and Friday, and has won five of its last seven games.
