WSU could be going under center more this season

If you happen to find yourself among the small but growing band of looky-loos that linger in the Martin Stadium stands to watch the Washington State football team go about its drills, you will observe a brief period when the Cougars practice their handoffs.

WSU safeties in cram course under Alex Grinch

PULLMAN – On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays the Washington State campus once again is awash in the familiar sounds of spring. From the library and beyond, one can hear the thud of shoulder pads getting broken in, the whoops of receivers standing along the sideline and, of course, the casual rebuke of “Ball security” frequently uttered by coach Mike Leach while receiver Gabe Marks leaves a trail of defenders in his wake as he prances around Martin Stadium with a football casually slung under his arm.

Connor Halliday, Vince Mayle stage outdoor Pro Day in Pullman

PULLMAN – Neither Connor Halliday nor Vince Mayle have had an easy journey from Washington State to the NFL, so it was fitting that during a Pro Day workout in front of NFL scouts and executives on Wednesday, the two former Cougars did it the hard way. Such workouts are usually conducted indoors but because of poor lighting and worse turf in WSU’s indoor practice bubble, Halliday and Mayle elected to stage the workout outside on the practice field.

Washington’s 4A player of year headed to WSU

PULLMAN – Ernie Kent has landed his first Seattle-area basketball recruit at Washington State, securing a commitment from Viont’e Daniels from Federal Way. As a senior at FWHS this past season, Daniels was named the Associated Press 4A Player of the Year, earning similar honors from the Tacoma News Tribune and Seattle Times as well.

Three decide to transfer from WSU men’s basketball

PULLMAN – Aaron Cheatum, Jackie Davis and Trevor Dunbar will transfer out of the Washington State basketball program and have been granted their releases, the school announced Tuesday. “We appreciate the contributions Aaron, Jackie and Trevor have made to the program over the last year,” coach Ernie Kent said in a press release. “We wish all three off them nothing but the best both on and off the court.”

WSU spring football: Competition the focus of Cougs’ camp

PULLMAN – Washington State faces far more uncertainty than last spring, and maybe that’s a good thing. A year ago the Cougars entered spring practice and everybody knew that Connor Halliday was going to start at quarterback, that Kalafitoni Pole and Xavier Cooper were the guys on the defensive line and that, for awhile at least, Darryl Monroe was WSU’s starting middle linebacker.

Age not factor in Duke’s success

HOUSTON – As his younger teammates bounced around one side of the Duke locker room in celebration, the team’s elder sat apart from the revelers – who are still blissfully ignorant of what the other locker room feels like – and vacillated between shock and relief. The three freshmen who start and star for the Blue Devils know naught but winning; they came to Duke to beat other teams and that’s what they’ve done, 33 times now. Who knows if they will save their slips of cuttings from that net, or if they’re saving space on their walls for NBA trophies?

Duke’s freshmen lead the way against Zags

As his younger teammates bounced around one side of the Duke locker room in celebration, the team’s elder sat apart from the revelers – who are still blissfully ignorant of what the other locker room feels like – and vacillated between shock and relief.

GU-Duke notes: NRG Stadium not a popular place for shooters

While the players and coaches at the South regional in Houston have been reluctant to place any blame for poor shooting on the weird setup of NRG Stadium, the number shows that the cavernous, domed arena is having a real effect on team’s ability to shoot from outside. Duke fared better than any other team on Friday and still shot just 44.4 percent as teams had combined to shoot just 39.8 percent in nine NCAA tournament games at the venue prior to Friday’s games, according to the Associated Press.

Winslow a handful for Blue Devils’ opponents

HOUSTON – In November, 2013, shortly after making their own college decisions, Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones helped convince Justise Winslow to depart Houston for Duke University. Winslow has brought his teammates back to his hometown, 16 months later, as the freshman trio lead Duke into today’s Elite Eight matchup with Gonzaga.
