Central Valley shakes off chilly weather, routs Snohomish in state first round

In weather so cold even the winners sprinted to the bus, Central Valley forward Kelsey Turnbow opted to chill for a moment Tuesday afternoon and talk about mental toughness. “We told ourselves at the beginning: don’t let the weather affect our game – and we didn’t,” said Turnbow, who scored three goals to help Central Valley to a 6-1 win over Snohomish in a first-round State 4A girls soccer playoff game at Spokane Falls Community College.

College soccer: WSU, GU, EWU and Whitworth all continue to improve

Whether the expections were high, low, or in-between, several regional college soccer teams exceeded them this year. There was the out-of-nowhere appearance of Eastern Washington in the postseason …the surprising fifth-place West Coast Conference finish by the Gonzaga women … another conference title for the Whitworth men … and above all, Washington State’s historic fourth straight NCAA appearance under its third head coach in four years.

The Mt. Spokane girls soccer team faced a dual challenge Tuesday night: tighten up their defense while not tightening up against the chilly weather. The Wildcats accomplished both, outlasting Lake Washington 1-0 in a State 3A first-round playoff game at Spokane Falls Community College.

Cougs, Whits earn NCAA soccer berths

For the fourth straight year – a first for the program – Washington State is sending its women’s soccer team to the NCAA Division I tournament. The Cougars received an at-large bid and will host Seattle University in a first-round match Friday. Kickoff will be at 5 p.m. at the Lower Soccer Field.

It’s all in the distant past now for the Central Valley girls soccer team, that 2-0 loss to Mead in the 4A District finals on Nov. 1. The Bears regrouped in a big way last week at regionals, blanking University and Mead to return to the state playoffs they won a year ago.

Eastern pulls away from Puget Sound

Even after a 34-point win Sunday afternoon, Eastern Washington basketball coach Jim Hayford saw plenty of room for improvement. “I don’t know if I’ve ever been happy as a coach in November, because it’s such an early work in progress,” Hayford said after an 89-55 romp over Puget Sound in an exhibition game at Reese Court.
