Minor tornado confirmed near Airway Heights

The National Weather Service has confirmed that a small tornado briefly touched ground Tuesday evening near Airway Heights. The tornado was a cold air funnel that touched down about 5:40 p.m. near Flint Road two miles northeast of Airway Heights, said Steve Bodnar, a weather service meteorologist.

Victim in Kettle Falls assault says family was targeted for their skin color

A man accused of calling a Kettle Falls businessman and his family terrorists, threatening them with a knife and breaking into their home Saturday night is in the Stevens County Jail. A police report says the man arrested in the case, Brandon Kilgore, told an officer, “I was trained to kill people like them,” while he was being taken to jail.

New Kendall Yards grocery store won’t be part of chain

A new grocery expected to open early next year just north of the Monroe Street Bridge will not be affiliated with a chain. The store, which will be on the eastern edge of Kendall Yards, will be called My Fresh Market, said Jim Frank, CEO of Greenstone Corp., which is developing the booming former rail yard northwest of downtown Spokane.

Witnesses say driver accused of killing Mt. Spokane High School student was going faster than 100 mph

Witnesses of a crash that killed a Mt. Spokane High School sophomore and left his best friend fighting for his life Saturday night told investigators that the car that struck them likely was going more than 100 mph. Ramiro Sanchez, 29, was arrested and is accused of vehicular homicide. He was northbound on U.S. Highway 395 in a Dodge Magnum and veered sharply to the left and struck a southbound Eagle Talon at about 8 p.m. about a quarter mile south of Hastings Road, court records say.

The company that owns River Park Square has won the bidding to the recently closed Macy’s in downtown Spokane. The announcement was made today by Centennial Properties, a subsidiary of the Cowles Co., which also owns The Spokesman-Review.

Lincoln County fire grows to 100 acres

Crews are battling a 100-acre wildfire in steep terrain in Lincoln County. Firefighters were called to an area northeast of Fort Spokane and west of Lilienthal Mountain about 3:10 p.m. Tuesday, said Jill Jones, dispatch manager of the Northeast Washington Interagency Communications Center.

Former Trade Winds motel downtown could become Howard Johnson

A vacant motel that’s become an eyesore at the gateway to downtown Spokane could reopen by the end of the year. Work to remodel the Trade Winds Motor Inn could start as early next month, said David Malik, a developer based in Renton, Washington, who is working on a deal to buy the concrete-block, curved inn.

24 Spokane County high school scholars honored with checks for academic excellence

Jeremy Ryan plays five musical instruments: Piano, flute, piccolo, mallet percussion and the accordion. He composed a song, “Tension” in the eighth grade that was performed by his school band. But the $4,000 check he collected Monday night at the annual Spokane Scholars Foundation banquet wasn’t for music. It was for math. He maxed out of calculus classes offered by his school so he took Advanced Placement BC calculus online when he was a junior.
