Slain car thief’s father has his own legal troubles

The father of a Spokane man shot to death in March while trying to steal a car appeared in Superior Court on Thursday – accused of trying to steal a car. Brian J. Kaluza was arrested in April after he tried to steal a marked Spokane Police Department patrol car, according to police reports. He was released on his own recognizance at that time, but violated his release conditions Tuesday when authorities say he committed a fourth-degree assault.

Post Falls man accused of killing girlfriend

Prosecutors charged a Post Falls man with killing his live-in girlfriend by slitting her throat and rolling up her body in a rug. Christopher W. Thompson, 44, is in jail on a $1 million bond. Police arrested him Monday on suspicion of killing Deborah A. Willette. Post Falls police first arrived at the couple’s home on the 700 block of North Compton Street at 4:40 p.m. Monday after a relative of Thompson’s called and said he’d confessed to killing Willette, according to police reports. Police forced their way into the apartment and found Willette’s body.

Truth Ministries able to keep shelter open, thanks in part to child

One little girl’s kindness has inspired others to help a homeless shelter on the verge of closing. A month ago, the future appeared bleak for Truth Ministries Spokane, a shelter for single men at 1910 E. Sprague Ave. Owner and director Marty McKinney announced the shelter would close Oct. 1 if it didn’t raise about $5,000 for bills and insurance payments.

Texting while driving common but hard to catch

Texting may be one of the most dangerous and common distractions to drivers, but local law enforcement officials say it’s also one of the most difficult laws to enforce. A new study from the University of Washington found that 8 percent of drivers observed at intersections in six counties in the state were distracted by an electronic device behind the wheel, and among those, 45 percent were typing on their phones.

Man in officer stalking case will stay in jail before trial

A Spokane man federal agents say believes himself to be the archangel of death will remain behind bars awaiting trial on federal charges of stalking. Brent Russ, 33, appeared in U.S. District Court before Magistrate Judge John Rodgers for a bail hearing Tuesday afternoon. Russ watched in silence, scowling, as federal defender Andrea George and Assistant U.S. Attorney Rudy Verschoor argued for and against his pretrial release for more than an hour.

With the announcement of a $5 million donation from the Jordan D. Schnitzer Family Foundation, Washington State University will begin public fundraising efforts to bring a new art museum to the Pullman campus. “I’m very touched and honored that I was able to help lead the charge for the new museum,” Schnitzer said.

The Iron Pigs took on the Red Sox on Saturday at a mostly empty Avista Stadium. Body found in field identified as Jamie Kieffer

A close friend of a Spokane Valley woman found dead in a field Thursday said just a day before her death, she’d made plans to turn her life around and stop using drugs. The Spokane County medical examiner’s office identified the woman as Jamie L. Kieffer, 50. She was found around 8:22 a.m. Thursday near Fourth Avenue and Custer Road. The medical examiner said drugs were in Kieffer’s system and may have contributed to her death, but further tests are underway.

Teens arrested after sword attack

Two teenage boys were arrested Tuesday after what law enforcement describes as a drug-fueled crime spree during which they assaulted one boy’s mother with a sword and planned to eat her liver. Spokane County sheriff’s deputies responded to an assault call on the 13300 block of East Mission Avenue at 1:20 a.m. where they found a beaten, bloody woman lying on her bed. A sword with a bent handle and two knives were nearby.
