Concerts, movies planned in Sutton Park

CHENEY – Since 1990, the city has been holding free concerts in Sutton Park – evenings of music, friendship and enjoying summer weather. Starting Wednesday, the concerts will start again, filling the neighborhood with music.

‘Everybody wants their saloon back’

SPANGLE – Pots of purple petunias still hang from the porch of the Spangle Saloon, 145 N. Main, and the sign hanging from the door invites visitors to "Scramble on in." From the outside, the neighborhood watering hole looks like it always has, except for the heavy duty lock securing the front door.

Cheney mobile home park to close in July

CHENEY – Residents of Myers' Mobile Home Park have to be out by July 18, according to a court ruling handed down Friday. The city of Cheney released a statement regarding the park which is the home for about 44 residents, shortly before the regular meeting of the City Council on Tuesday night.

Christian church history focus of class series

Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 3307 W. Rowan Ave., will offer classes to discuss why there are so many Christian denominations and beliefs they hold in common. The classes are held Thursday evenings.

Latah Creek market draws a crowd

With the weather heating up, there are many local farmers markets and sales sprouting up throughout the area. The Latah Creek Variety Market is no exception and kicked off a summer of events Saturday. It was held in the parking lot of the Latah Bistro, 4241 S. Cheney-Spokane Road and reached Chaps Coffee Company, 4235 S. Cheney-Spokane Road, on the other side of the parking lot. It was organized by the Latah Partners, businesses in the area who have formed a partnership to help publicize the area and each other's shops in the area near Cheney-Spokane Road and Highway 195.

Two suspects arrested in burglary cases

CHENEY – The Cheney Police Department was able to solve several vehicle break-ins last week when it made two arrests for suspicion of a residential burglary. Commander Rick Campbell said the department received a burglary report June 17 and later during the investigation arrested Nathan D. Sallee, 19, on charges of possession of stolen property and burglary, and a 17-year-old male on charges of possession of stolen property and a felony possession of a controlled substance after the residential burglary at the 900 block of Fifth Street.

First gentleman reads to local students

The children in Tamra Ireland's third-grade class at Windsor Elementary School may have been getting a little antsy for the last day of school last week, but their attention soon was focused on the special visitor who came to read to them. First gentleman Mike Gregoire stopped by the class to read from the book "The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs," by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith. Gregoire said he chose that book because it tells the classic children's tale from the wolf's point of view.

Medical Lake considers police-hiring options

MEDICAL LAKE – The city of Medical Lake will hire an interim police chief while it weighs options for police services that range from hiring a permanent chief to contracting with another community for police coverage. City Administrator Doug Ross told City Council members Tuesday that Mayor John Higgins has directed the city staff to hire an interim police chief, who could be on the job sometime in the next week or so.

Police overbudget on overtime

CHENEY – Cheney police are working overtime, so much so that the department's overtime budget is "out of whack," according to Cmdr. Rick Campbell. The department that has spent 63.6 percent of its overtime budget after only five months of the year, he said. Overtime accumulated during the snowstorm at the end of January doesn't count toward the overtime budget, since the work was billed through emergency funding, he said.

Market returns

CHENEY – The weather hasn't really been cooperating lately, but that didn't stop the opening of the fifth season of the Cheney Farmers' Market last Friday. Pathways to Progress, a nonprofit organization that is working to revitalize downtown Cheney, presents the market every Friday from June through October. Pathways members noticed that summertime is extremely slow for businesses in Cheney once the students from Eastern Washington University go home.

Medical Lake considers fireworks ban

MEDICAL LAKE – Fireworks and junk cars topped the recent City Council agenda, with people on both sides of the issue weighing in on a possible fireworks ban and leaders getting an update on the removal of 26 abandonded vehicles from city limits. Longtime fireworks stand operator Dennis Snyder, who won approval to operate his stands again this year at Denny's Harvest Foods, E. 215 SR 902, and at the Medical Lake Car Wash, E. 625 SR 902, took the opportunity to speak to the council during the public comment section of the June 3 meeting.

Century of scholarship

In the late 19th century, the area around Cheney and the West Plains was growing quickly. Children were taught in a brick building on College Avenue and C Street in Cheney. There were four teachers and six levels of study. "In 1890, the school board and citizens decided to build a new school across the street from the present Fisher Administration Building," according to the Cheney High School 2006 Alumni Directory. "The building housed only eight grades, since high schools had no legal status in Washington."

Heart problems open new doors

When Kadi McKinley started her career at Cheney High School, she had hopes of playing on the girls basketball team and the volleyball team. But during her freshman year, she began having fainting spells and couldn't perform as well athletically.

Airway Heights plants trees along U.S. 2

AIRWAY HEIGHTS – After two months of work along U.S. Highway 2 in Airway Heights, the strip of landscaping has been completed and was dedicated with a little help from the Airway Heights Falcon's Club. Mayor Matthew Pederson brought out his golden shovel last week to help plant the last tree in the area near Lundstrom and Highway 2 along 14th Avenue and asked the children in the Falcon's Club how trees help the environment and the community.

Alki Street paving plan on road to approval

CHENEY – The Cheney City Council held a public hearing Tuesday night to discuss the city vacating 1,700 feet of Alki Street between the Cheney-Spangle Road and the Cheney-Plaza Road that borders the Terra Vista development. Steve Emtman of Defender Developments said he wants to pave and realign the road to include two 12-foot-wide travel lanes and a 12-foot turn lane.

Skaters rally to save ML park

MEDICAL LAKE – The skate park at the corner of Barker and Hallett has been a headache for city employees and neighbors. City employees have been out cleaning up cans, cigarette butts and other garbage every morning. Vandals once set fire to one of the ramps. The police have been out on numerous times to chase away skaters who have hopped the fence after hours. There have also been problems with graffiti.

Rusk was going on a vacation to do some mining up north, and everyone in town knew he was leaving. The two men found Rusk's campsite and shot him to death on April 22, 1886. The two suspects later died in prison.
