Getting There: Dead, diseased poplars along I-90 being cut down

Dead and diseased Lombardy poplar trees growing as a visual screen between Interstate 90 and the Spalding Auto Parts wrecking yard will be cut down. The trees are part of a highway beautification project dating back to Lady Bird Johnson and her advocacy for the 1965 Highway Beautification Act.

Hundreds attend viewing party for supermoon lunar eclipse

A coppery-colored moon in total eclipse rose from the eastern horizon Sunday night to the delight of several hundred people gathered for a Spokane Astronomical Society viewing party. Society members came equipped with their best telescopes and gave members of the general public a close-up view of the eclipse, which occurred while the moon was at its closest point to Earth.

Rare ‘supermoon’ eclipse expected Sunday

Sunday evening’s shadowing of the moon is getting all of the hype you would expect from an event that has been dubbed the “supermoon” eclipse. It turns out that the eclipse – which will be in progress when the moon rises in the east at dusk – is occurring at the same time the moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its near-monthly orbit.

Manito’s Rose Hill gets new gazebo

Work on an octagonal gazebo is nearly complete on Rose Hill at Manito Park. The $60,000 structure was a gift from the Friends of Manito. It’s located near the dahlia garden and midway between the formal hybrid roses and the less formal old-fashioned roses.

Weekend weather

A stretch of warm weather will kick off the first several days of autumn with highs reaching the 70s under partly sunny to mostly sunny skies. The warmest day should be on Thursday, when highs in Spokane may approach 80 degrees. The forecast is for 78 to 79 degrees in urban parts of Spokane on Thursday.

STA adding bus times, altering routes

Passengers who ride the Spokane Transit Authority shuttle from the Plaza to the parking lots at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena are going to get an additional evening bus leaving at 8:15 p.m. Currently, the last shuttle leaves at 7:15 p.m.

Getting There: South Hill neighbors celebrate arterial reopening

South Side drivers in Spokane breathed a sigh of relief late last week with the reopening of an important arterial route along High Drive, 43rd Avenue and Hatch Road. The project completion was considered so significant that city officials joined a reopening celebration and fundraiser that drew more than 100 people to Rocket Market at 726 E. 43rd Ave. on Thursday evening.
