Wind advisory posted for noon to 8 p.m.

The National Weather Service this morning posted a wind advisory for gusts to 50 mph across outlying parts of the Inland Northwest and up to 40 mph in Spokane Valley.

Comstock area to get 7 dry wells

As part of the city’s massive effort to control sewage pollution in the Spokane River, the city is installing seven dry wells in the Comstock Park area to intercept stormwater before it gets into combined sewer and stormwater lines. The $240,000 project is being financed by the city’s water-wastewater integrated capital fund.

Weekend could see calmer weather

Another relatively mild Pacific storm arrives over the Inland Northwest today, bringing rain and gusty winds. In Spokane, light rain is most likely between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Winds will veer from the southeast to southwest and pick up speed.

I-90 morning commute time takes hit, analysis says

Traffic congestion during the morning commute on Interstate 90 has worsened in the past few years, but problems with slowdowns and delays are relatively minor compared to West Side freeways, state transportation planners said in a new traffic congestion analysis. I-90 is plagued with westbound backups in the vicinity of Fancher Road from about 7:30 to 8 a.m., and those backups have gotten worse from 2011 to 2013, the state said.

Two dozen workers in East Spokane are building more than 200 prefabricated prison cells that will be shipped by truck to Oliver, British Columbia, as components of a new corrections center there. Construction of such modules has become increasingly common in prison construction since 2006.

Modernization is key goal for county clerk candidates

The retirement last winter of longtime Spokane County Clerk Tom Fallquist set the stage for this fall’s race between Timothy W. Fitzgerald and Mary M. Wissink. Fitzgerald, 54, a Republican, was appointed by the Spokane County commissioners to replace Fallquist. The retired Marine colonel has been busy learning the intricacies of keeping records for Superior Court.

Local property taxes collected for urban renewal will pay for a new Interstate 90 overpass for Greensferry Road in east Post Falls. The long-sought overpass will connect businesses and neighborhoods north and south of the freeway and improve public safety response times.

Inland Northwest winter won’t be backbreaker, outlook says

The Inland Northwest should have a warmer- and drier-than-normal winter, the Climate Prediction Center said this week. If the prediction is correct, it will be the first time in five years that tropical waters have warmed in a weak El Niño and caused the Inland Northwest to get an easy winter.

Five homes offered for historic register

Five historic homes in Spokane, including one farm property outside the city limits, are up for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The nominations will be reviewed Oct. 24 when the Washington State Advisory Council on Historic Preservation convenes at Walla Walla City Hall starting at 9 a.m.

Weekend weather: Set for a rebound

The first good rainfall of the season this week may have dampened a dry landscape across the Inland Northwest, but it didn’t end the chance for some good weather for outdoor activities.
