State to add lanes to I-90 from Sullivan to Barker

The state Department of Transportation announced on Monday that it plans to add a third lane to Interstate 90 in each direction from Sullivan Road to Barker Road, with the work beginning next spring. The Spokane Valley project is one of 21 highway projects statewide worth an estimated $112 million that will receive funding as a result of savings on construction contracts in recent years.

Getting There: New airport art lets imagination take flight

The newest installation of public art at Spokane International Airport is described as “a flock of alluring, complex, three-dimensional floating shapes.” Spokane Arts Director Karen Mobley goes on to say the work by fabric artist Louise Kodis “brightens and brings a lively energy to the airport rotunda with shapes that suggest dreams, ideas and facts about flying.”

The National Weather Service on Friday issued a blowing dust advisory for the upper Columbia Basin today. Winds gusting to 40 mph are predicted in the basin today when a cold front driven by a new low-pressure system crosses the region.

Investigators suspect wiring in restaurant blaze

Tung Loon Garden at 3627 N. Division St. was festooned with red neon – so much that the sky above it would glow a warm red on cold, foggy nights. That neon is now the focus of an investigation into the late-night fire Tuesday that badly damaged the roof of the restaurant.

Valley officer kills pastor at nursery

A pastor and widely recognized Spokane Valley businessman, concerned that a prowler was on his property late Wednesday, got out of bed, apparently armed himself with a pistol and headed toward a sedan in the empty parking lot of his popular nursery and greenhouse complex nearby. Moments later, gunfire erupted and W. Scott Creach, 74, collapsed with a fatal bullet wound to his chest after an apparent scuffle.
