CV kicker sparked Bears’ win

Kicker Jake Miller accepted his share of blame in Central Valley’s 13-12 non-league loss to Post Falls. But he gets the lion’s share of credit in Friday’s huge 34-31 victory over Ferris. Not only did he kick what proved to be the winning field goal from 50 yards, but also he made a 45-yarder earlier in the game. Miller averaged 50 yards on five punts, including a 70-yarder that put Ferris in an early hole and a 55-yarder that left the Saxons with long field in its bid to rally in the game’s final minute.

First-place CV holds off Ferris

On a night that further muddled things in the Greater Spokane League, Central Valley pulled out all the stops in its ongoing series of football thrillers with Ferris. Opportunism and one big play served CV well, but there was also all manner of trickery that enabled the Bears to pull off a 34-31 triumph that wasn’t decided until time ran out.

Saxons edge Indians

There was something for everyone when Ferris won the war and North Central’s Ben Johnston won the battle Wednesday to determine the Greater Spokane League boys cross country champion. Ferris’ Saxons were tested in the 26-29 victory, as Johnston outlegged Saxons ace Adam Thorne over the last half of the 3.1-mile race at Audubon Park, tying the course record of 15 minutes, 12 seconds. Johnston said the plan, “a mile and one-halfish” into the race, was to, “just stay with him and see what I could do. I stuck with him and was like, ‘All right, if I’m going to do this, I might as well go.’ ”

Washington preps: Giampietri likes CV’s late schedule

While chatting with Rick Giampietri at Albi Stadium last week, he talked about the nature of Central Valley’s football schedule, which began favorably and ends with successive murderous games against Ferris, Gonzaga Prep and Mead. He liked it, saying it will prove if the Bears deserve to be in the playoffs. Last year they proved not only they belonged, but also came within an eyelash of the State 4A semifinals, losing for the second time in stirring games with Ferris’ Saxons.

Prep notebook: Knight’s daughter a secret no longer

It is common for high school freshmen to have immediate impact in girls cross country. This year is no exception. The intent for one, Katie Knight – daughter of North Central boys coach Jon Knight – was to run below the radar.

Cheney rallies past Colville, stays atop GNL

For the better part of the football game, Cheney’s offense was stuck in neutral and found itself trailing visiting Colville by 11 points. The Blackhawks suddenly found another gear, scoring 29 points in the game’s final 9 minutes for a 39-28 triumph Friday night.

Mt. Spokane notches first win over LC in program history

Mt. Spokane made school football history with a classic example of ball control. Two touchdown drives that consumed more than a quarter’s worth of time produced the Wildcats’ 35-28 victory – the program’s first win over Lewis and Clark.

‘Lil Chef’ keeps Cheney cooking

Cheney soccer star Kellie Zakrzewski wears a sweatshirt that reads “Lil Chef.” The four-year starter (whose name is pronounced Zak-CHEF-ski) scores goals with an artistry befitting a French Cordon Bleu culinary school degree. Before she’s done, Zakrzewski, last year’s Great Northern League MVP and third-year all-leaguer, could approach 120 goals in a high school career that’s included three state berths and a state semifinals appearance.

Panthers sweep nemesis Tigers

The volleyball competition is always intense between Mead and Lewis and Clark, which have combined to produce eight state finalists and six championships over the past six years. Tuesday night at LC was no exception, although the Panthers had more firepower and made fewer mistakes in a 25-22, 25-16, 25-23 Greater Spokane League sweep.

Prep notebook: Crossover Classic has stellar field

Volleyball is at its season midpoint and Mead travels to Lewis and Clark tonight for the renewal of their recent Greater Spokane League rivalry, then joins many of the best area – plus state-ranked – high school teams, this weekend in Spokane’s annual Crossover Classic Tournament. Tourney director Stacey Ward was tearing her hair out filling the Crossover field after four teams dropped out.

Mead sends LC to first defeat

Sometimes the soccer ball bounces right. And it bounced right more times for Mead than Lewis and Clark in the Panthers’ 3-1 victory in Friday’s match between Greater Spokane League unbeatens. Twice Mead had shots bang off the posts, only to bounce favorably and result in second-half goals that staked the victors to a 3-0 lead.

Soggy shootout

The arm of Mt. Spokane quarterback Travis Ward betrayed him at times, but he atoned with his feet during a soggy Friday football shootout at University. Ward had touchdown runs of 26 and 24 yards to rally the Wildcats (4-1 overall, 3-1 in the Greater Spokane League) to a 35-28 victory after two of his three interceptions had allowed the Titans back into the game.

Williams gives Wildcats big treat

When the Williams clan moved north from California to develop a regional ice cream distributorship, it would one day become a sweet deal for Mt. Spokane football. Some two decades later, third-generation family member Colten Williams continues his move up the Greater Spokane League record books as a slot back/receiver in the Wildcats’ spread offense.

School mourns player’s death

There was sorrow in the halls of Valley Christian School and the remainder of the football season was up in the air Monday following news of the death of player Andrew Fremont “Drew” Swank. Swank, a 17-year-old junior, was pronounced dead Sunday following a head injury suffered when he was blocked and hit the ground during an eight-man football game on the field of defending state champion LaCrosse-Washtucna on Friday.

Eagles flying

West Valley quarterback Drew Clausen performed like a magician in the first half and the Eagles’ defense had the Midas touch. Combined, they made for a Friday night fairy tale first half and happy ending, beating visiting Clarkston in football for the first time in more than a decade, 24-6.

Saxons’ defensive plan pays off with a victory

Contain Colten Williams and you control Mt. Spokane. That was Ferris’ defensive strategy and a big reason, particularly in the first half, that the Saxons prevailed 31-14 Thursday evening in Greater Spokane League football. Williams, the Wildcats’ pass-catching and rushing threat, had some receptions for a handful of yards in the initial two quarters. But the Ferris defensive horde took away the run, limiting him to a yard-per-carry average.

Shadle girls display depth

Saving themselves for Saturday, Shadle Park’s girls cross country runners nonetheless showed why they are the Greater Spokane League favorites. Prep notebook: GSL football a 6-team race

If anything has come out of the first three weeks of Greater Spokane League football, it is not to take any team for granted. University’s overtime win against Gonzaga Prep was a case in point. Ferris breaks free

An apparent broken play broke Mead’s heart in the Ferris Saxons’ 28-10 Greater Spokane League football win over the Panthers, Thursday night at Albi Stadium. The Saxons (2-1) struggled on offense just to lead 7-3 at half and were facing third-and-1 when the Panthers’ defense blew up what appeared to be an option dive play.
