Youth sports notebook: Martin captures air rifle title

Denise Martin is the area’s most recent nationally acclaimed rifle marksman. The 15-year-old, who will be a sophomore at Chewelah High, won the 2009 Junior Olympic Three-Position Air Rifle championships in early July a week after helping Washington to its second straight national team championship at Camp Perry, Ohio.

BNSF downs lone undefeated team

It took an International Tiebreaker to determine the outcome as BNSF pulled out a 2-1 win over previously unbeaten Home Run Construction in Spokane Valley Girls Softball Association competition. The game was scoreless through seven innings. Using the tiebreaker in the eighth, each team started with a runner at second base. Hayley Garrahan doubled in a run and Makenzie Beaudry-Norris singled home another for a 2-0 lead BNSF lead.

Hurliman remains PeeWee League force

Spokane Valley Baseball’s PeeWee League began to take playoff shape as it surpassed the season’s midpoint at the Fourth of July break. The biggest mover was Hurliman Heating (Ponderosa), which got off to a late start but won six of seven games in a rush. The only loss came 6-4 to first-place Blasingame Insurance (Liberty Lake).

Indians pile on runs, take deciding game of series

Aja Barto punished the outfield fence in more than one way doing his a part in a Spokane Indians power display that punished Vancouver in the final game of their five-game Northwest League baseball series Wednesday at Avista Stadium. The Indians hit for the cycle during a six-run fourth inning in their 11-2 victory in the rubber game of the series. They finished with two home runs, four doubles and a triple during the 16-hit night.

Late rally not enough for Indians

One inning made all the difference as the Vancouver Canadians scored six times early and weathered a comeback bid by Spokane Tuesday night at Avista Stadium. Despite back-to-back home runs by Aja Barto and Vincent DiFazio in the sixth inning, the visitors prevailed 6-4 to even their series at two games apiece.

New outfielder’s bat, speed pace Indians win

Playing just his third game for the Spokane Indians, right fielder Miguel Velazquez made a favorable impression. Velazquez coupled bat with speed, hitting safely in his first three at bats, two of them doubles, and scored twice in the Indians’ 6-3 Monday night victory over Vancouver.

Dragons’ Hauff signs with Dons

Citing his desire to play at the college level, St. George’s graduate Trenton Hauff has signed to play baseball with the University of San Francisco. “It has been my goal to be a college athlete since I started playing baseball,” the five-year starter for the Dragons said. “I aspired to get that opportunity.”

Area spring athletes honored

Billy Moon, University pitcher/outfielder and Greater Spokane League MVP was named to the Washington sportswriters 4A All-State Baseball first team. Compiling the spring all-state teams for voting in baseball, softball and soccer is coordinated by Rene Ferran of the Tri-City Herald and chosen by high school sportswriters throughout the state.

Youth sports notebook: Finish feels familiar

The Washington 4A/3A East-West football game at Everett’s Memorial Stadium last weekend had an ending nearly identical to that of last year’s game played at Central Valley. The East prevailed 13-12 in the waning minutes and a Greater Spokane League quarterback, Central Valley’s Blake Bledsoe, again was named most valuable player. He also received the East’s Lynn Rosenbach Memorial scholarship award.

High school friends reunite yearly at Hoopfest

Participating in Spokane’s cultural recreational sporting phenomena such as Hoopfest becomes a difficult habit to break, as the 70-plus who have perfect attendance in all 20 can attest. For three of them, it isn’t so much the competition but the camaraderie that has kept them coming back from Hoopfest’s inception. High school buddies John Hentges, Andy Mitchell and Ryan Larsen play on the same team and, along with another high school pal, Alex Schuerman, have done so for the past 17 summers.

Construction team sets pace for girls 16U

Home Run Construction opened its Valley Girls Softball Association season with three straight wins in the 16U League. The East Valley-area team outscored its opponents 42-8 to move atop the conference in its second week. Among the wins was a 15-5 decision over second-place Farrell Spray Services, Charnelle Abrahamson 4-for-4 with two triples, a double and four runs batted in.

Youth notebook: Colville’s Pinkham leads team to title

When Ben Pinkham’s mother, Kathy, sent an e-mail about her baseball playing son, she labeled it “Small town hero.” That is what the recent Colville graduate proved to be. During the four-team All-State High School Baseball series in Yakima the weekend of June 13, Pinkham had a big hand in Team Adams’ championship.

Baseball, softball leagues launch summer seasons

In between rainstorms, Spokane Valley Baseball and Spokane Valley Girls Softball Association summer youth leagues began their seasons. Most successful in dodging the drops was the baseball Midget League, where American On Site Services from Pasadena Park and George Velis DDS from Chester were victorious in their first two games.

Rogers grad opts to go pro

Jake Partridge, selected in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball draft and previously a signee with Gonzaga University, has opted to turn pro. The Rogers High multisport standout signed his contract this week with the Tampa Bay Rays and reports Thursday to their Gulf Coast League rookie team.

Notebook: State’s top players visit West Valley

A strong contingent fills team rosters for the Washington All State Girls Basketball series Saturday at West Valley. Games begin at 1:30 p.m. with B-East versus B-West, followed by 1A East versus West at 3:30 and 3A/2A East versus West at 5:30. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and children age 12 and under.

Greenacres, Evergreen win titles

Records were set and Greenacres and Evergreen divided up titles during the Spokane Valley Middle School all-league track meets. Greenacres was undefeated in Class A boys and girls competitions to finish ahead of Evergreen. Evergreen won both Class B boys and girls to finish ahead of the Bruins.

Youth notebook: AA baseball grows, reorganizes

American Legion Junior (AA) baseball has expanded to 26 teams this summer and now is divided into four divisions among two leagues. “We’ve got new teams,” commissioner Mike Padden said. “(Mt. Spokane coach) Alex Schuerman came up with the idea and we couldn’t figure a reason not to do it.”

Mt. Spokane hires basketball coaches

Mt. Spokane has hired from without and within to fill two vacant varsity basketball positions. The new boys coach is Greg Hannan, a financial advisor whose varied basketball background included a year as head coach at Freeman. He replaces retiring coach Bill Ayers.

GNL takes its second chances

TACOMA – A pair of multiple-event Great Northern League state qualifiers focused their efforts into one good performance and a third took advantage of a do-over during the State 2A track and field meet at Mount Tahoma High. After bombing in her javelin appearance a day earlier, Pullman’s Niina Al-Hassan won the 300-meter hurdles Saturday.

Shadle gets some consolation; NC out

TACOMA – Shadle Park and North Central softball teams discovered during State 3A competition on Friday at SERA Fields that you can only live dangerously for so long. As a result, the mistake-prone NC’s Indians succumbed to Prairie and Shadle’s Highlanders squandered their share of scoring opportunities against first-time state qualifier Port Angeles, forcing both Spokane teams into consolation with tournament-opening losses.

Evan Cook is new to the team, but definitely no stranger to a Cheney soccer program that has had an inordinate level of success. State participation notwithstanding, even when the Blackhawks (17-2) were competing in the Greater Spokane League they had upper-division finishes their final three years.

If you think Shadle Park is charting unknown waters when it plays in the 3A portion of state softball Friday, consider its 11 a.m. opponent, Port Angeles. The Highlanders (18-5) are making their fifth straight state softball trip and ninth since 1998, the others coming in Class 4A.

High school golfers get early starts at state

If the early bird catches the worm, will that translate favorably to area golfers who drew early tee times in today’s first rounds at their respective state tournaments? University’s District 8 champion Hank Frame will open State 4A boys play at 7:30 a.m. in a threesome that includes Eastlake’s co-third place state finisher Kevin Penner.
