Ferris senior distance runner learns from past races

Last spring, Ferris distance runner Adam Thorne became the talk of state track when he blazed to a large lead after a lap of the 3,200-meter run, only to be reeled in by the pack and finish fifth. “I felt a lot more comfortable in the lead than sitting in a pack,” Thorne said. “That was the main reason I did it. When I look back, it was pretty naïve of me.”

Washington preps: Not all routs take the worst route

Linda Sheridan was in the formative stages of her storied Shadle Park coaching career when, as an equally young sports writer at the Spokane Valley Herald, I wrote critically of the Highlanders posting a lopsided win over an outmanned Central Valley girls basketball team. I didn’t know her then, but we’re friends today. She reminded me recently about that story at our meeting with the Inland Northwest Sports Hall of Fame committee.

NC prevails with depth

The Tracy Walters Invitational cross country race is unique in that it features 10 runners, scoring eight, as opposed to the typical seven runners per team, with five scoring. Thus it was that North Central repeated as champions over Ferris’ upfront strength, 155-160, during Saturday’s meet at Audubon Park. I errantly indicated that Ferris won in my story Sunday, confused by double scoring listed in the result sheet.

Ferris, NC boys lead pack at invite

For the better part of the third Tracy Walters Invitational boys cross country race, it was difficult to determine which of five teams was in control. On the final lap, three Ferris Saxons closed ranks with race-long leader and teammate Adam Thorne and showed why they are the No. 1-ranked 4A team in Washington and in the nation.

G-Prep sinks Saxons

It was something old versus something new in a football game that had something for everyone when the venerable option offense of Gonzaga Prep went against the new-age spread of Ferris. For the G-Prep Bullpups, it was a blast from the past, led by the Shane Schmidlkofer-Bishop Sankey rushing tandem, that upset the mistake-prone defending Greater Spokane League champions, combining for nearly 400 yards rushing in a 38-35 victory in front of 6,057 fans.

East Valley players overcoming ACL injuries

Women’s sport and the dreaded acronym ACL tend to go hand in hand. Scarcely a year goes by, it seems, when another female star is felled by a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her knee. “Research shows that females are anywhere from nine to 10 times more likely to tear an ACL than a male,” said Brian Cronin, an owner of U-District Physical Therapy and Institute of Sports Performance. “It definitely shows they are more at risk.”

Ferris, NC will converge at Audubon

The cross country season begins with a bang at 11 a.m. Saturday when three ranked boys teams in a national magazine’s preseason poll face off at Audubon Park in the Tracy Walters Invitational. Host North Central went from preseason No. 1 last year to the real thing at season’s end by winning the Nike Nationals.

Veteran Panthers will be challenged

If the Mead Panthers exceeded coach Steve Snider’s expectations with a third-place finish last fall in the State 4A girls soccer tournament, they’ll have to go some to do so again. It will be no surprise if they reach the postseason given their veteran status. But Snider remains cautious.

Former Mead Panther helps French football team as player, coach

Chris Elo was in the lineup for Mead in 1998 the first time the Panthers played Mt. Spokane in football. Now living in a suburb of Paris, France, he was back at Mead on the sidelines watching a Mead practice in August, picking the brains of coaches, many who mentored him when he was a player.

Williams rings bell with scamper

In the age-old struggle between immoveable object against irresistible force, it took a big-name player to make a big-time play. Mt. Spokane’s Colten Williams broke a 0-0 stalemate with an amazing 72-yard scamper with fewer than 3 minutes to play and for the first time in five seasons, the bell tolled for the Wildcats.

Saxons open with big win

The Greater Spokane League tested a new Washington Interscholastic Activities Association amendment off the bat when Ferris opened the football season with a 59-0 victory over North Central. Last spring the state’s governing high school activities body passed a rule that keeps the clock running in the second half when a football lead reaches 45 points.

Great Northern League powers keep watchful eye

What Craig McCormick, the new coach of defending champion Pullman, fears most about this year’s Great Northern League is the awakening of sleeping giants. Former Greater Spokane League schools Cheney, West Valley and Clarkston must eventually get things going and become dominant, McCormick said.

U-Hi’s Diedrick among new hires in GSL

A year or so ago Bill Diedrick was contemplating semi-retirement in San Diego following three nomadic decades as a college and professional assistant football coach. But a phone call from a friend and ex-college teammate detoured him – back to his home town and into the Greater Spokane League following a 28-year absence with his hiring as head coach at University.

Baseball, softball seasons wrap up

American On-Site Services (Pasadena Park) denied teams from Liberty Lake a sweep and perfect seasons during the Spokane Valley Baseball championship games Aug. 1. In the opener of two championship games, American On-Site (12-2), seeded No. 2 in the Midget League, scored early and often for a 10-3 victory over Spokane Athletic Supply (13-1).

Hunch pays off for Wild

A hunch paid off, and as a result Mt. Spokane Wild advanced to the final four in their eight-team bracket today of the Washington Junior American Legion state baseball tournament. Coach Alex Schuerman, after agonizing the night before, went with Kelly Fitzpatrick on the mound Monday and the lefty pitched a gutsy 3-2 win over the Yakima Valley Peppers in loser-out play at University High. It was Mt. Spokane’s third one-run decision in the tournament and fifth in the past six games overall.

Now in N.Y., Buterbaugh has traded hoops for golf

That Jason Buterbaugh became this week’s Then and Now subject was sheer happenstance, precipitated by a chance meeting at Painted Hills Golf Course. Buterbaugh was a starter on West Valley’s 1992 State 3A third-place basketball team and in town to visit with family. He hit ’em long at Painted Hills, consistently driving to the red 100-yard stakes and beyond. His wit and that of his grandfather, Don Ceye, made for a delightful round and led to this story.

Ferris grad Lorenz reaches a high point

What began simply as a fill-in position while playing volleyball on the family’s backyard sand court, has blossomed into a Division I opportunity at a major volleyball program for 2009 Ferris graduate Marty Lorenz. Lorenz has signed to play at Cal State Northridge. The Matadors play in the powerful Mountain Pacific Sports Federation League and this past season were ranked as high as first nationally and finished fourth in the final poll.

It is the latest meeting in their long-standing relationship.

Former U-Hi sprinter fulfills ‘Jeopardy!’ dream

Former University High and University of Portland sprinter Erik Krauss could easily be the question to an answer from his favorite television game show, “Jeopardy!” “Quick reflexes came in handy for this man, whether it was anticipating a starter’s gun as a track and field sprinter or pushing a buzzer on this popular show.”
