Valley Fire Station 6 opens on East Sprague

Standard medical calls kicked off the first fully operational day for Spokane Valley’s reconstructed Fire Station 6 on Wednesday. Firefighters no longer need to worry about the roof leak that plagued their former station’s apparatus room, nor a damaged kitchen from a recalled dishwasher that caught fire two years ago. They built the new station at 6306 E. Sprague Ave. right where the old one stood, torn down in March to make way for the $1.55 million project, said Deputy Fire Chief Larry Rider.

Strangling suspect arrested

A man suspected of strangling a Spokane woman to death was arrested Friday morning in California after he was found sleeping in the victim’s car. Police officers in Clearlake, in Northern California, responded to a report of a suspicious car parked behind a grocery store around 6 a.m. and found Tony T. Callihan inside the 2000 Dodge Stratus. He was taken into custody without incident, according to a Spokane Police Department news release.

Suspected strangler told stepfather of killing, documents show

A suspected strangler sought by police told his stepfather he killed a woman before fleeing the Spokane area in a stolen car, according to court documents filed Wednesday. Tony T. Callihan, 38, is suspected of killing 48-year-old Michelle Koenen after the pair got into a fight at what is described in those documents as a “meth party.”

Large marijuana grow busted in Elk

Abnormal electrical use on an Elk property led to last week’s discovery of an elaborate marijuana grow operation from which authorities seized nearly 100 plants. Spokane County Sheriff’s detectives could smell freshly harvested marijuana on Dec. 5 while standing outside near the 43000 block of Newport Highway, according to court documents.

West Central death ruled homicide

A man found dead in a West Central alley Friday morning was shot multiple times in the head, according to the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office. His death was ruled a homicide. David B. Deponte, 28, was surrounded by a pool of blood when a resident found him while taking out the garbage. Police believe Deponte was walking through the alley when he was killed.

The hunt is over for a man suspected of firing at police and abducting a Rathdrum woman. Authorities captured fugitive Mitchell Lee Walck, 57, Wednesday morning in North Dakota after he allegedly threatened a man by gunpoint outside a Bismarck truck stop.

Fugitive releases abductee

A Rathdrum woman kidnapped at gunpoint by a man on the run from police was released unharmed in Montana, authorities said. Now, a multistate search is continuing for Mitchell L. Walck, who also is alleged to have opened fire on an Idaho State Police officer during a Friday night pursuit. The officer was uninjured, but the gunman escaped into the woods off Bingham Road.

Sheriff says ad campaign has boosted reports, reduced crime

Local billboards, television and radio spots are telling residents what they can do to lower the crime rate: “Report suspicious activity.” It’s a call to action that Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich has been touting for the past year, and it’s working. Residential burglaries are at their lowest since the beginning of 2010, and he attributes the reduction to community reports.

Crews improving High Drive Bluff

Down the steep High Drive Bluff, it smells like the holidays as forestry crews chip away at pine trees. The crew of seven has been working the bluff since October under a $50,000 grant from the Department of Natural Resources to the city’s Urban Forestry program to clear undergrowth and reduce the risk of intense fires along the South Hill’s recreational treasure.
