Education Notebook: NWC band plans spring craft fair

The Northwest Christian Schools Crusader band department will hold its first spring craft fair at the High School Activity Center, 5104 E. Bernhill Road, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The fair will include vendors from Washington and Idaho selling wood crafts, clothing, jewelry, paintings and glass works. Northwest Christian students will entertain visitors with music, sell food and raffle off gift baskets.

James Fisher recently graduated from basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. Fisher is the son of Paul and Jessica Fisher, of Addy, Wash., and graduated from Westover Academy in 2010.

Cheney Jazz Band named champions in Mead festival

The Cheney High School Jazz Band shared their musical talent at the Mead Jazz Festival in March and impressed the judges, coming home overall sweepstakes champions. Area Scouts earn Eagle Awards

Ryan Mansfield, a member of Troop 313, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest given in the Boy Scouts. For his project, Mansfield worked with the Eagle Ridge Development to develop and install nature signs on its three-mile trail.

Education Notes: Ferris to perform ‘Taming of the Shrew’

Ferris High School drama students will perform the William Shakespeare comedy “The Taming of the Shrew” in the school’s auditorium today, Friday and May 11-12 at 7 p.m. The show will be the final production in the auditorium before construction begins for the Ferris remodel. Ferris’ theater arts teacher, Mary Cooper, set the play in the 1940s, in the era of “Rosie the Riveter.” Cooper saw Katherina, aka the “Shrew,” as a “Rosie,” being told she has a woman’s job to do: Submit to her husband. Katherina doesn’t really submit, but finds a common ground with her husband. In the end, her husband is just as “tamed” as she is.

G-Prep brings ‘Les Mis’ to stage

Drama students at Gonzaga Prep will bring the Broadway favorite, “Les Miserables” to the stage in the Kubiak Theater, 1224 E. Euclid Ave., beginning Friday at 7 p.m. Based on the 1862 novel by Victor Hugo, the musical is set in 19th century France and tells the tale of Jean Valjean (played by Spokane Civic Theatre and Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre’s Joe Lyons), who has been released from prison after 19 years for stealing bread to feed his starving sister and her family. Eight years later, Valjean has assumed a new identity as a wealthy factory owner and mayor. His employee Fantine, played by Kaila Ceballos, is exposed sending money to her illegitimate child, Cosette, played by Sunnyside Elementary student Meaghan Redmond and G-Prep’s Camrynne Sullivan, and loses her job.

Salk Middle School celebrates 50 years

Salk Middle School is celebrating its 50th anniversary Saturday with a ceremony at the school. Doors open at 1 p.m. Neighbors and Salk alumni are invited to the celebration. Visitors can look at old and new yearbooks and newspaper clippings to see how the school has changed. Classrooms will be open for tours, and student art projects will be displayed.

LC presents ‘Zombie Prom’

Teenage love will never die in the Lewis and Clark Tiger Drama spring performance of “Zombie Prom” beginning at 7 p.m. April 26 in the LC auditorium. The comedic musical is set in a 1950s high school and tells the story of the forbidden teen romance between Toffee, played by Laura Chamberlain, and rebel Jonny, played by Mario Zavala. The lovebirds declare their feelings for each other, and then Toffee is banned from seeing Jonny by her mother Megan Harbaugh), her father (Mica Pointer), and the wicked principal, Miss Delilah Strict (Phoibe Purcell).

Spokane Scholars to honor students

Spokane high school seniors will be honored for their academic achievement on Monday at the 20th annual Spokane Scholars Foundation Banquet. The scholars were nominated by principals, counselors or teachers based on accomplishments in one of six content areas: English, social studies, mathematics, science, world languages and fine arts. Education Notebook: Fifth-grader wins poster contest

Megan Anderson, a fifth-grader at Springdale Elementary School, was chosen to represent Washington state with her poster in the national Bring Our Missing Children Home art contest. This is the second year Becky Gearhart, Anderson’s teacher, has had her students participate in the contest. Her students’ artwork from last year’s contest was also chosen to represent Washington.

Teen pair win national ballroom titles

Bayley Brooks and Nicholas Kane are national champions. The teenage ballroom dance partners went to Baltimore during their spring break from Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy at the end of March to compete in the 2012 USA Dance National Ballroom Championship and returned home with four titles, winning first place in all of their events. The dancers also were awarded a $225 scholarship for their win.

School Notes: Mead dance team to compete on national stage

The Mead High School Dance Team will put its best foot forward March 30-31 when the group heads to Anaheim, Calif., for the USA National Dance Competition. The Mead dancers are Abbie Magee, Lunden Nugen, Kali Bradford Jenae Schrader, Emily Salzl, Mara Cole, Betsey Steinert, India Halliburton-Link, Alli Stauffacher, Kylie Booth, Tricia Findley, Alex Christensen, Lauren Brink, Madi Royal, Shelby Steele, Taylor Schwartz, Nicky Senn, Michelle Chapel, and Danielle Turner. Their coach is Tonya Axworthy.

Education Notes: Rogers High to stage ‘Charlie Brown’ play

Rogers High School drama students will perform “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” beginning Friday at 7 p.m. in the school theater. Additional performances are Saturday at 2 p.m., and March 23-24 at 7 p.m. For the show, Rogers has chosen a double cast: Miles Fowler and Seth Little, as Charlie Brown; Baylie Crowley and Jordan Imholt, as Sally; Bridget Gabriel and Kelsey McKay, as Lucy; Laura Braunstein and Jourdan Stra kbein, as Patty; Dakota Goodwin, as Linus; Bailey Phillips, as Schroeder; Miles Fowler and Hailey Garcia, as Snoopy; teachers Tony Ross and Loralee Walter, as the teacher; and Imholt and Tessa Johnson, as Woodstock.

Education Notebook: Orchestra concert, fashion show at Mead

The Mead High School Orchestra will celebrate friendship and love at the second annual Musical Heart Strings event on Friday at Mead High School from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The occasion will feature orchestral selections from “Beauty and the Beast,” “West Side Story,” “Aladdin” and “Titanic.” While guests are entertained by the orchestra, they will also have an opportunity to enjoy a fashion show, with Mead students modeling clothes by local retailers. There also will be desserts and a silent auction. Items up for bid include wines, pet items, gift certificates to restaurants and for massages, and a movie-themed basket.

Home economists create placemats for Meals on Wheels

It began in the spring of 2009 with a conversation in a Wenatchee quilt shop. Cathy Lobe, a member of Spokane’s Retired Home Economists, inquired about a number of homemade placemats hanging on the wall. The placemats, Lobe learned, were made by local quilters and donated to Wenatchee’s Meals on Wheels program. Lobe, an avid sewer, came home and shared the idea with the other women of the Spokane Retired Home Economists.

Education Notes: Evergreen’s Books and Bingo Night is tonight

Students and parents at Evergreen Elementary School in the Mead School District can have a night of fun and get a book at Evergreen’s Books and Bingo Night, from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight. The family event will also include a basket raffle, with baskets made by students in each classroom. Shakey’s Pizza will be on hand, selling pizza slices for $1.50.

Mead outlines STEM program

The Mead School District will introduce local residents to the future of education on Wednesday at the STEM+ Open House, at the Mead High School theater, beginning at 6:30 p.m. “Imagine It – A Night to Celebrate STEM+ Education” is an opportunity for parents, students and community members to learn about the STEM+ (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) program. Current sixth-graders can learn about seventh-grade STEM+ academic and after-school programs; middle school students can learn about what STEM+ programs are offered at the high school; and current sophomores can learn about Mead School District’s new Riverpoint Academy, opening this fall. At the Riverpoint Academy, Mead juniors and seniors will have an opportunity to take STEM+ courses and receive college credit from Eastern Washington University, Washington State University or Community Colleges of Spokane.

Students at Gonzaga Prep will entertain audiences with their winter production of a modern-day “Frankenstein” beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Kubiak Theater. Performances will continue at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 14 and 2 p.m. Jan. 15. The play, an adaptation by Philip Pullman, is set in the “right now,” according to the Rev. Kevin Connell, Prep’s principal and the play’s director. Victor Frankenstein ( Aaron Burns) is a 21st century college student who fills his lab with computers to pursue the technical power he needed without considering his responsibility for what he created.
