Cancer didn’t stop Margaret Clarke’s drive

Margaret Clarke is independent; the Barker High School student said it makes her unique. But it’s also a quality that would prove necessary for her to finish high school while she battled a rare cancer – a battle that she won. At 16, Clarke was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a bone cancer, after she began experiencing hip pain. After the diagnosis, Clarke needed a flexible schedule because she would miss three and sometimes four days of school a week due to sickness from chemotherapy and radiation treatments. It was then that she enrolled at Barker, in the I-TRACC program, where she was able to complete her high school classes at her own pace, independently. After extensive treatment, Clarke is virtually cured; the cancer is gone.

Three area women, Karen Johnson, Marilyn Garofano and Julia Postlewaite, took on the task of re-starting a Friends group that hasn’t existed in the library since the 1990s. They’re also putting together their first big fundraising event, a book sale on May 14.

Wheel-life adventures

Roller derby girls may look pretty, in their pink and black outfits and fishnet stockings, but don’t mistake them as delicate. Derby girls are more than dolls on wheels; they’re aggressive, no-nonsense and competitive. They’re also extremely devoted, to their sport and to each other. In 2006, Stacie Ellis founded the Lilac City Roller Girls, the first flat-track roller derby league in Spokane. “We needed to have a league. I waited for somebody to start one and nobody did, so I started handing out fliers. I thought I might as well create some fun and I wasn’t going anywhere,” Ellis said.
