Achievements: Area Boy Scouts earn Eagle rank

• Daniel Berg, a member of Troop 393, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest given in the Boy Scouts. For his project, Berg helped paint and update the Center Pointe Community Center, which provides positive social, recreational and educational activities for adults with diverse abilities.

Education notes: Sacajawea teacher receives award

Jamie Smith, a science teacher at Sacajawea Middle School, recently received the 2010 Mona Bailey Teacher Leadership Award. Smith was evaluated on her leadership skills and her dedication to her students. She is the first teacher to receive the award from eastern Washington. Smith was also awarded $1,000.

Winton students and dads, are you ready for some football? Football fans at Winton Elementary School in the Coeur d’Alene School District can watch “Monday Night Football” with their dads and other fans at the Dad and Me Fall Kick-Off party on Monday, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

G-Prep students earn AP Scholar distinctions

Students from Gonzaga Prep recently earned AP Scholar status for their academic excellence on their college-level Advanced Placement Program exams. AP Scholars with Distinction, given to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3.0 or higher on five or more of the exams, include Evan Anders and Emma Irwin, of Colbert, Anthony Cossette, Margaret Cressey, Benjamin Dart, Mariah Harvey, James Heusner, Katrina Marcinkowski, and Brian Tully, all of Spokane.

Education notes: Students stage ‘Twelfth Night’

Students in the Lake City High School Theatre drama company, Troupe de Wolfe, will kick off their theatrical season with “Twelfth Night,” a performance that is said be the greatest of Shakespearian romantic comedies, on Thursday in the high school auditorium at 7 p.m. A “meet the company” dessert reception will follow the opening night performance. The entertaining production is a Shakespearian twist on the original comic plotline of maniacal events surrounding the mixed up and mistaken identities of twins. In this rendition, Shakespeare mixes up the gender of the twins, too.

Logan seeks online votes in Clorox grant competition

The Spokane Public Schools Foundation has found a “clean” way to earn some money for Logan Elementary School. The foundation recently entered a grant program sponsored by the Clorox Corp. The program is similar to the Pepsi grant program, where participants have the opportunity to win $20,000 or $50,000 for their schools.

Education notes: Bicycle ride benefits trail, Lakes school

Students and their families at Lakes Magnet Middle School will take a bicycle “fund” trail ride on Saturday in the Saddle-Soup-Skedaddle on the Prairie Trail. Beginning at 11 a.m., starting from Coeur d’Alene’s Fort Ground Grill, Lakes trail riders will head north up the Prairie Trail portion of the Centennial Trail. The ride will end at 2:30 p.m., back at the Grill, where students and their families will no doubt be ready for a hearty meal, including soup, of course, a sandwich and something to drink.

Education notebook: Young artists get sculpture lesson

Art students at Canfield Middle School had a special visitor on Sept. 24 when local artist Rhea Giffin stopped by the school. During the summer, the Arts and Culture Alliance of Coeur d’Alene awarded Canfield a stipend to obtain a piece of artwork from “Art on the Green,” and the school chose a sculpture by Giffin titled “Mel’s Friends.” The 3 ½-foot-tall sculpture is on permanent display in Canfield’s library.

Students act on their Constitutional rights

Students at Holy Family Catholic School recently stepped back in time – more than 200 years – for Constitution Day. The assembly was a learning experience that included the whole school. Seventh- and eighth-graders dressed up, portraying significant characters, either playing a part in the Constitution or what the result of the Constitution represented.

Trinity graduate wins essay contest

Taylor Bowman, a recent graduate of Trinity Catholic School in Spokane, was honored by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas for his eighth-grade essay, “The Joy Life Brings Through Others.” The Catholic Daughters hold a contest each year to recognize the poetry, art and essay talents of students in sixth through eighth grades.

Students from Lakes Magnet Middle School will raise money for Trail Creek today by playing – times three – at Triple Play in Hayden Lake. Canfield and Woodland middle schools also will participate in the fundraiser. Family and friends are invited to join in the fun.

Shadle Park teacher named Einstein Fellow

Shadle Park High School physics and science teacher Matthew Inman was recently recognized for his excellence in teaching by the Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education as a 2010-’11 Einstein Fellow. Inman is one of 32 teachers selected by the group to be a part of the Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Program. The program offers exceptional elementary and secondary science, technology, engineering and math teachers an opportunity to serve in the national education or public policy arenas.

Education Notes: CdA Charter Academy hosts road rally contest

Students at Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy, along with members of the community, will compete in the “Rally for Education” on Sept. 25. Competitors will take part in the afternoon road rally by following directions and solving clues at pit stops throughout Kootenai County. Teams will include a driver and a navigator and up to four passengers, in their own car.

Lighter backpacks can prevent injuries

Students in North Idaho are heading back to school and soon will follow homework, textbooks and heavy backpacks. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, backpacks loaded with textbooks, notebooks, paper and other school supplies can result in faulty posture. Because children are still growing, they are more susceptible to lifelong injuries caused by heavy and improperly worn backpacks.

Briefs: Tips sought in Regal fire

A fire on the morning of Aug. 20 destroyed Regal Elementary School’s playground structure. According to a press release from Spokane Public Schools, the Spokane Fire Department responded to a call at the school at 1:48 a.m. The fire melted the plastic climbing wall and slides and damaged the connecting equipment. The play structure is valued at nearly $41,000.

School registrations, orientations this week

Summer vacation is quickly coming to an end, and North Idaho students and their families must prepare for school. The school year will begin Sept. 7. In the Coeur d’Alene School District, registration for new and returning students in the elementary and middle schools will be from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Education notebook: Shadle plans festivities for reopening

Shadle Park High School students, along with the rest of the community, won’t have to wait until the first day of school to see their newly remodeled school. The two-day grand reopening celebration begins Aug. 27 and includes self-guided tours and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Shadle graduate and former professional football player Mark Rypien will speak at 6 p.m., and at 7 p.m. attendees can enjoy a jazz concert in the auditorium featuring longtime “Tonight Show” drummer Ed Shaughnessy, along with the Bob Curnow Big Band.

Matthew Gray of Troop 448 earns Eagle rank

• Matthew Gray, a member of Troop 448, has earned Scouting’s highest rank, Eagle Scout. For his project, Gray assembled and placed a bench on the grounds of the Immaculate Retreat Heart Center in south Spokane for visitors to the cemetery and along the pathways.
