Donuts With Dad Friday at Bryan

Students at Bryan Elementary School can enjoy Donuts With Dad on Friday, thanks to the school’s Positive Adults With Students Club. Dads, grandpas and other men who are important to Bryan students are invited to have donuts at 8 a.m., and then play on the playground with the kids from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

Hutton student’s letter wins honor

Hutton Elementary students recently had the opportunity to write to their favorite authors, living or dead, in the 2009-’10 “Letters About Literature” contest. Sixth-grader Reagan Nelson wrote to “Little House on the Prairie” author Laura Ingalls Wilder, as her favored writer. Nelson’s letter was chosen as the winner in the Level 1 competition for Washington state. In Washington, 1,413 letters were received at Level 1 and of those, only 45 were returned for judging at the state level.

Fundraiser benefits Johnson fund

Elementary school teachers in the Coeur d’Alene School District, along with the staff at Fernan Elementary School, will host the “Julie Johnson Jamboree” on April 8 at Lake City High School at 7 p.m. According to a press release from the Coeur d’Alene School District, the jamboree is a combination of the annual Spring Chorus Festival and a celebration of Johnson’s life.

Rogers students honored

Two Rogers High School students were recently recognized for their essays, answering the question: “Is Justice Blind?” in an essay contest piloted by the Washington Bar Association, through its Committee for Diversity. Alexandra Franklin was the state winner and was awarded a $500 prize. Her essay will be published in the Washington State Bar Association magazine, Bar News, in May. Christian Mashtare placed second and was awarded $250.

Robotics team takes Rookie All Star honor

The Coeur d’Alene High School TeraViks, in a Robotics League with over 40,000 students on 1,800 teams, recently competed in the Northwest Regional in Portland. The TeraViks took home the Rookie All Star award and have been invited to compete in the first World Championship in Atlanta in April. According to a press release from CHS, 500 teams from around the world will compete with the TeraViks in a “fast-paced robotic soccer game called Breakaway.” The teams will compete for a high score, and also be judged for design excellence, business plan development, safety practices and overall best team.

Cat in the Hat visits Holy Family

“Look at me NOW! It is fun to have fun…” And, fun they had when the Cat in the Hat stopped by Holy Family Catholic School last Thursday, to help students in pre-kindergarten through fourth grades celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The mischievous cat read the Dr. Seuss favorite, “Green Eggs and Ham,” then “he gave them a pat,” and was gone, just like that!

Area residents earn Eagle Scout rank

Andrew Black and A.J. Black were recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest given in the Boy Scouts. They are a members of Troop 313. For their project, the brothers did landscaping for the city of Spokane, on the north side of Riverside Avenue, between the Riverfalls Tower and the Maple Street Bridge. The boys replaced sod, picked up litter, painted and repaired a fence, and planted bushes, shrubs and trees. They also installed irrigation and electricity for the city’s Christmas lights.

Spokane teacher of Year honors go to three

Three teachers in Spokane Public Schools have been honored as Teacher of the Year. Dorene Brown, a teacher at Rogers High School, was named the Washington State ProStart Teacher of the Year; Paula Korus, a teacher at North Central High School, received the Teacher of the Year honor from the Washington State Council for the Social Studies; and NC’s band and orchestra teacher, Collins Loupe, was awarded Teacher of the Year for the Spokane Falls region.

Students raise funds, make bracelets for Haiti

Third-graders at Hayden Meadows Elementary School recently did their part to help children in Haiti. The students raised more than $1,620 in three days with a penny drive they organized. The Hayden Meadows students also made bracelets for the children, “to help brighten their day,” said information from the Hayden Meadows Web site.

Area residents have graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio: Air Force Airman Derek Baskin graduated in 2008 from Ephrata Senior High School and is the son of Martin Baskin of Soap Lake, Wash.

NC presents musical ‘Big River’

Students at North Central High School share the story of two rambunctious young boys in the musical “Big River, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” beginning tonight at 7:30 at the high school. The cast, crew and orchestra totals approximately 60 NC students. Students on the main stage, floating down the Mississippi River, include: Dalin Tipton as Huck and Anthony McCain as Jim, with Lindsey Gay as Miss Watson, Brittany Cozza as the Widow Douglas, Colton Sullivan as Pap and the King, Corey Evans as the Duke, and Tim Hensz as Tom Sawyer.

Bryan students will celebrate Seuss

The students and staff at Bryan Elementary School will begin celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday, who would be 102 on Tuesday, on Monday with the appropriate green eggs and ham for breakfast and Grinchy “roast beast” sandwiches for lunch. On Thursday, the celebration continues, with Bryan Elementary’s Dinner and a Book, beginning at 6 p.m.

Liberty bands together against cancer

The students and staff in the Liberty School District showed their support for Liberty Superintendent Bill Motsenbocker and his family when they gathered on the Liberty High School football field Monday. Mike Jydstrup, a teacher at Liberty Junior High and Elementary, the LHS leadership class, and the Liberty Junior Boosters, recently purchased bright pink wristbands, imprinted with the name of Motsenbocker’s wife, Jeanne Motsenbocker, who has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing treatment. The group of more than 400 students and staff came together, formed in a heart, and presented the Motsenbockers with the wristbands.

School signups to begin April 27

It’s not too soon for parents in the Coeur d’Alene School District to start thinking about signing their kindergartners up for their first year of school. The district will begin registering children for fall 2010 kindergarten on April 27. Kids must be 5 or older by Sept. 1 to be eligible for kindergarten.

Learn about APPLE, Montessori

Parents interested in enrolling their child in Spokane Public Schools’ Montessori or APPLE (Alternative Parent Participation Learning Experience) programs will have the opportunity to attend an informative orientation meeting. Students must live within the boundaries of Spokane Public Schools, but are not required to live within the attendance boundaries of Balboa, Jefferson, Garfield or Franklin to be eligible.

‘Oklahoma’ onstage at LCHS

Lake City High School students will perform Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical “Oklahoma!” March 4 through March 6 and March 11 through March 13 at 7 p.m. in the LCHS Auditorium. A matinee will also be performed on March 13 at 2 p.m. The performance will include favorite tunes such as, “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” and, of course, “Oklahoma!”

Audubon students treated to skating

Eight lucky students from Audubon Elementary had the opportunity of a lifetime on Jan. 24 when Page Ahead Children’s Literacy Program donated 10 tickets to the U.S. Figure Skating Championships finale. The children were not only able to see the finale, they were also able to meet and have their picture taken with gold medalist Rachael Flatt, a spokesperson for the national children’s literacy organization Reading is Fundamental. She made the students’ visit extra special, autographing championship memorabilia for each student.

Students collect change for orphanage

Bryan Elementary students’ fundraiser for Haiti’s earthquake victims raised more than $740. The students collected spare change and left a change jar at the school office. The money is being donated to an orphanage in Haiti.

Concentration camp subject of play

The Mead High School Theatre Department will perform “I Never Saw Another Butterfly,” beginning Tuesday at the school’s Performing Arts Theatre. The performances will run through Friday and will begin at 7 p.m. The production is based upon the book of the same name, about the children of the Terezin Concentration Camp during World War II.

Student-tended flowers for sale

Hayden Meadows Elementary School will begin presales for its custom hanging flower baskets on Monday. Green Thumb Productions, Hayden Meadows commercial greenhouse, is selling petunias in a variety of colors, red geraniums and cherry tomatoes. The baskets run $30 each.

Education notebook: Adams Elementary raising funds for Haiti

Students and staff at Adams Elementary School on the South Hill are doing their part to help the survivors of the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti with the “Helping Haiti in a Hurry” fundraiser. During the past week, Adams students, teachers, the ASB, PTG and the community have been collecting stuffed animals and spare change to help the victims in Haiti. The fundraiser will run through Friday.
