Cataldo math team adds up wins

The fourth grade “Math is Cool” team at Cataldo Catholic School, 455 W. 18th Ave., recently showed off their math skills, winning first place in the state competition. The team placed first at the regional competition, too. The cool team players are Ben Schemmel, Ella McKeirnan, Erin O’Rourk and Lizzie Marcinkowski. They are coached by Molly Schemmel.

CdA seniors prepare to cross the stage

Beginning Thursday, Coeur d’Alene seniors can finally say goodbye to books, classes and high school. Commencement ceremonies will begin with Project CDA Alternative High School’s graduates crossing the stage at North Idaho College on Thursday to receive their diplomas.

Education Notebook: Program brings Snow White to Spokane

Snow White left her forest and made her way to Spokane for Garfield Elementary School’s Apple program talent show and theater production at the Corbin Senior Activity Center on May 15. The Apple program concentrates on a specific area of study each year; performing arts is this year’s focus. The students worked at The Lion’s Share, a creativity and celebration center, run by Jim and Joan Becker, local Spokane theater teachers and storytellers. The students learned how to produce, rehearse and eventually performed an original piece put together by the Becker’s daughter, Megan Becker, titled “Snow White in Spokane.”

EWU names scholarship winners

•Eastern Washington University awarded three area high school students $2,500 Scholastic Honors Scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year. Amanda Giannandrea, will graduate from Shadle Park High School, and is the daughter of John and Geralyn Giannandrea of Spokane.

Music students make mark with state judges

Coeur d’Alene High School and Lake City High School music students were recently honored for their orchestral and melodic talents at the Idaho State Solo Competition earlier in May. Anthony LaFrinier of LCHS was named state tenor champion. This is the second year he has won the award. Jared Monaghan, also LCHS, was named state timpani champion.

Education notebook: Centennial Festival celebrates Franklin

Franklin Elementary School is turning 100 years old. The school will celebrate its birthday with a two-day Centennial Festival, beginning today. Alumni will have the opportunity to catch up at a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. at the school today, where they will be entertained with a video of pictures, put to music, displaying the school through the years. The Tap Grandmas will also perform. The former students can be taken on a historical tour of the school, put on by 18 students who have been preparing for the festival for a number of weeks.

Best CdA teachers honored

The Coeur d’Alene School District honored teachers and staff last week at the annual retirement/recognition dinner at the Coeur d’Alene Inn. Erik Karns, a science teacher at Coeur d’Alene High School, was named Educator of the Year. According to a press release from the district, Karns said he holds his students to high expectations. “Every day, I enjoy the great feeling that my work is paying off in the lives of my students. Regardless of their grade, they both enjoy and understand science better,” he said. He has been on staff at CHS since 2004.

Mead preparing for Developmental Olympics

Students in Mead’s Developmental Learning Center programs are training for the Olympics. On May 28, the eighth annual Developmental Olympics will be held at Mead High School, where approximately 100 Mead students with developmental disabilities, grades kindergarten through 12, will participate in track and field events.

Regional mathletes bring home accolades

Holy Family Catholic School, 3005 W. Kathleen Ave., in Coeur d’Alene, competed in the Northern Lights Regional Math Festival on April 28. The day-long competition took Holy Family’s fourth-grade class to St. Mary’s Catholic School in Moscow, Idaho. The 23 students carpooled in 10 cars in snowy weather and slick roads, dressed in their team shirts, for a day of math with more than 100 students.

Eastern Washington University recently awarded area high school seniors with Presidential scholarships of $2,000 for the 2009-2010 academic year. The scholarships were awarded to high school students with a cumulative high school grade-point average of 3.8 or higher or an SAT score of 1250 or higher. Travis Erickson will graduate from Rogers High School and is the son of Kevin and Lisa Erickson of Spokane.

Theater production stands to fight abuse

The theater arts students at Ferris High School are standing up against abuse. Beginning tonight, the students will perform the third annual “Project Hope: Fighting Abuse,” at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The shows, also to take place next Thursday and May 15, are written, directed and performed by students.

District on swine flu alert

Headlines about swine flu continue to dominate the nightly news and morning newspaper. As reports trickled in of probable cases in the Inland Northwest, the Coeur d’Alene School District said it was determined to keep families informed about the disease. The district recently sent home letters with students from the Panhandle Health District, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, and the U.S. Departments of Education and Agriculture.

Food drive brings in 2 tons

Students at Mt. Spokane High School recently sponsored the annual spring food drive at Yoke’s Fresh Market, 210 E. North Foothills Drive, to benefit the Mead community. The Mt. Spokane ASB class, along with class councils from each grade, collected nearly 4,000 pounds of food, according to a press release.

Students earn honors in health-related program

Students from Coeur d’Alene, Lakeland and Post Falls school districts were recently announced as Health Occupation Students of America winners at the 10th annual state HOSA competition held earlier this month in Boise. More than 360 students from 25 schools attended the conference, to compete in health-related events. The students are a part of the Riverbend Health Professions program at Riverbend Professional Technical Academy in Post Falls.

Area residents graduate from Air Force basic training

Nine local residents recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. Air National Guard Airman Jacob Crow earned distinction as an honor graduate of the course. He is the son of Daryl Crow of Spokane Valley, and graduated in 2001 from Central Valley High School.

Coeur d’Alene School District will be holding kindergarten registration on Tuesday at all local elementary schools. Registration requirements include a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate, current immunization records and a current utility bill to verify the family residence.

Education notebook: ‘Seussical’ chronicles who’s who of Whos

The advanced musical theatre class at Lewis and Clark will entertain one and all when they perform “Seussical the Musical,” April 30 through May 1 at 7 p.m. The entertaining show includes storylines from more than 20 of Dr. Seuss’s works with music and songs by his most memorable characters, such as the Cat in the Hat, Horton, Thing 1, Thing 2, and more, while visiting the houses in Who-Ville and the Jungle of Nool.

Scholars to be honored Monday

Spokane high school seniors will be honored Monday for their academic achievements at the 17th annual Spokane Scholars Foundation Banquet. The banquet, to be held at the Spokane Convention Center at 6 p.m., will recognize 134 students from 23 high schools who have excelled in English, social studies, mathematics, science, world languages and fine arts.

NIC extends WINGS to area students

North Idaho College will give Lakeside High School juniors and seniors the opportunity to spread their WINGS Tuesday. NIC will offer an information session on its dual credit program, known as WINGS, an acronym for Win by getting a Good Start, for parents and students at 11:30 a.m. at Lakeside. Local home-schooled students are also welcome to attend.
