Area high school students win EWU scholarships

Eastern Washington University recently awarded area high school seniors with a Presidential Scholarship for $2,000 for the 2009-’10 academic year. The scholarship was awarded to high school students with a cumulative high school grade-point average of 3.8 or higher or an SAT score of 1,250 or higher. Jared Sol will graduate from East Valley High School and is the son of Dirk and Penny Sol of Newman Lake.

Two reach Eagle Scout rank

Tyler Will, a member of Troop 313, was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest in the Boy Scouts. For his project, Will designed, built and installed four bat houses in a barn on the property of the Bureau of Land Management in Southwest Lincoln County. The houses will provide roosting habitats for Yuma Bats.

Call-in show presents schools Superintendent Stowell

Spokane Public Schools Superintendent Nancy Stowell is “Educating Spokane.” Spokane community members will be invited to call the school district’s live, hour-long, call-in show on KSPS channel 7, and have their concerns heard and their questions answered regarding the state’s budget and other issues affecting their schools. The show is scheduled for April 23 at 7 p.m.

Students earn Congressional Awards

Area high school students were recently honored at North Idaho’s first Congressional Award Ceremony at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene. Bronze medals were awarded to Blake Alfson and Sariah Vieira of Lakeland High School, Jennifer Brooks, Jordan Finney-McRoberts and Megan Kobrick, of Lake City High School, Coleman Paul Boyer of Coeur d’Alene High School, Kate Johnson of Coeur d’Alene Academy, and home-schooled students Daniel Hooper, and Caitlin O’Linger.

Schools receive grants from College Spark

A six-year grant from College Spark to Spokane Public Schools, totaling $500,000, aims to prepare students for college. Beginning in the summer, Rogers High School, Garry and Shaw middle schools will provide social and academic support to students through the AVID and Navigation 101 programs. Rogers and Garry received the grant for both programs, and Shaw received the grant for the Navigation 101 program.

Young students will compete in state geography bee

Five students from the Coeur d’Alene School District have been invited to compete in the 2009 Idaho Geographic Bee Friday at Boise State University. The students will be among 100 elementary and middle-school-age kids who qualified to be in the contest. Max McSwain, a fourth-grader from Borah Elementary, Connor Robertson, a fifth-grader from Fernan Elementary, Sarah Klader, a fifth-grader from Hayden Meadows Elementary, sixth-grader James Soderling from Canfield Middle School, and Clayton Gersten, an eighth-grader from Lakes Middle School, first competed at the school level, and then took a test which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. The top 100 scorers are now on their way to Boise.

Middle schoolers win big in math competition

Spokane middle school students know their math. And, they proved it at the MATHCOUNTS competition, recently held at Northwood Middle School. The St. George’s team, Justin Heftel, Kashif Ravasia, Erin Kaya and Taryn Stamper, placed first and qualified for the state competition March 21 at Microsoft in Redmond, Wash. Northwood placed second; Sacajawea received third place; Lakeside was fourth place; and Garry placed fifth.

Waldorf School plans informational session

Sandpoint Waldorf School will host “A Day in the Life of a Waldorf Student” on Tuesday, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the school, located at 2007 Sandpoint West Drive in Sandpoint. The evening program will give parents, teachers and other community members the opportunity to see Waldorf’s education firsthand. Participants can experience a math lesson, a language arts assignment, and a physics experiment.

Upgrades to start in May on Spokane schools

With the approval of the 2009 bond, Spokane Public Schools will continue with plans to upgrade Spokane schools. According to a school district press release, improvements for Longfellow and Garfield Elementary schools will begin in May with new roofing, insulation, flooring and much-needed air systems. Each project will cost approximately $3.5 million. Seven other “1980-era prototype” schools will also receive upgrades during the next six years.

LCHS students raise funds for ‘Pennies for Patients’

Lake City High School students are putting their pennies to good use. Through March 27, the students are participating in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients program. The national program raises funds to research cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma research, and for patient services.

District presents Rachel’s Challenge

The Coeur d’Alene School District’s Safe and Drug Free Schools programs and the Lakes Middle School Parent Teacher Student Association will hold two assemblies on Wednesday, about Rachel’s Challenge. Rachel Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Her father, Darrell Scott, developed Rachel’s Challenge after approaching a Congressional House Judiciary Committee on issues regarding school violence. The nonviolence school program was created in memory of his daughter.

Eight local residents recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. Air Force Airman Brandon Bixby graduated in 2008 from Central Valley High School and is the son of Brian and Anne Bixby of Liberty Lake.

Ferris’ Ham on Regal takes the stage

On Sunday at 2 p.m. the MayHAM will begin when Ferris High School’s Ham on Regal Players hits the stage for a special opening performance of “MayHAM at the Museum.” Teachers, parents, preachers and more make up the Regal Players, who who have been putting on the show for 46 years. Regular shows begin Wednesday and run through March 14, at 7:30 p.m. A matinee performance will be March 14 at 1:30 p.m.

Area residents complete basic training

Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio recently announced the graduation of seven local residents from basic military training. Air Force Airman Shawn Steele is the son of Laura Holt of Colville, Wash., and a 2008 graduate of Northport (Wash.) High School.

Lakeland seniors plan luau to raise funds for party

Lakeland High School seniors are raising funds for their all-nighter graduation party – with another party. On March 14 the graduating class will hold silent and live auctions and a luau in the high school commons. Dinner and the silent auction begin at 5 p.m. and include dessert. The live auction will begin at 6:30 p.m. Participants will have to join the “island” festivities to find out if the evening will include the traditional roasted pig and leis.

Kindergarten registration starts

Registration for kindergarten and first-graders who will be attending Spokane Public Schools in the fall will begin on Monday. Parents can register their children Monday through Friday, from 8:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at Spokane Public Schools elementary schools.
