Scout earns Eagle for Camp Caro project

Sean Clemens, a graduate at Gonzaga Preparatory School, was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest award given in the Boy Scouts. For his project, Clemens replaced lumber and hardware on the picnic tables and benches at Camp Caro in the Dishman Hills Natural Area. He is a member of Troop number 419.

Young writer has work published in magazine

Ashlyn Williams has wanted to be a writer since she was 8. Now, at the age of 13, her dream became a reality when she won a national writing competition in American Girl magazine, where her story was published. She was among 1,500 applicants in the competition. Williams has been reading American Girl magazines for five years and has entered the competition four times. She wrote her story, "Sweet Rose," when she was 12, drawing from her personal experience.

Two Ferris sophomores become Eagle Scouts

Sawyer Hamann, of Troop 313, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest award given in the Boy Scouts. For his project, Hamann installed three wildlife water guzzlers for the Conservation Reservation Program for the State of Washington.

Central Valley freshman a debate team standout

James Ganas is a 14-year-old freshman at Central Valley High School. But he's not your average freshman. Ganas, along with teammates and students from other local schools, was competing earlier this week at the high school debate nationals in Las Vegas. He began the school year as a debate novice. By midyear he was on the junior varsity, and now Ganas is on varsity.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Nathan Robar recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is the son of Scott and Merilee Robar of Spokane and is a 2007 graduate of Northwest Christian School in Colbert.

Ride raises funds for orphans

Mead Middle School teacher Don Story and his family aren't taking a typical vacation this summer. Leaving from Riverfront Park at 9 a.m. Thursday, Story will bike to Yorktown, Va. He and his wife have four children, ages 5, 10, 12 and 14. His two oldest will join him occasionally. The rest of the family will follow Story in an RV.
