Annual auction planned by St. John Vianney school

St. John Vianney Catholic School will host its 21st annual school auction, "A World of Possibilities," at Northern Quest Casino, 100 N. Hayford Road, on Saturday. Lexi Roach, a senior at Kahlotus High School in Kahlotus, Wash., and one of eight in her graduating class, was awarded a $54,000 Washington State University Regents Scholarship. Roach is one in 25 Washington students to receive this scholarship. On Saturday, Cancer and Community Charities will host A Wonderland of Wine and Food at the Best Western Coeur d'Alene Inn. Wine tasting will aid breast cancer awareness

Huckleberry's Natural Market, 926 S. Monroe Ave., continues to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Pink Ribbon wine tasting on Friday. Beginning at 7 p.m., "pink friendly" wines, such as Luna di Luna Pink Merlot, Terra D'Oro Barbera, and Chateau St. Michelle Pinot Grigio and Syrah and a taste plate filled with cheese, crackers, and breads will be served to raise money for the Spokane Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation and breast cancer research.

Community update: Event will offer information on breast cancer

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Northwest Woman Magazine, Deaconess Medical Center, Sacred Heart Medical Center, Valley Medical Center, Rockwood Clinic, Cancer Care Northwest, Holy Family Hospital, Women's Health Connection, and Kootenai Medical Center will hold the annual Because There is Hope on Monday. From noon to 8:30 p.m., the region's cancer specialists and physicians will be on hand with information on diagnosis, treatment options, survivorship, support groups, and more at the Spokane Community College Lair.

Achievements: Earthwatch Institute selects Ferris student

Steven Lippert of Ferris High School was selected to spend two weeks in the Earthwatch Institute's Student Challenge Awards summer program. “ William Cornwell, a senior at Ferris High School, recently was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest award given in Boy Scouting. Cornwell is a member of Troop 272, and his project was providing 56 soccer balls, goal nets, training equipment and T-shirts for children at a mission in Comayagua, Honduras. He is the son of Charles and Gail Cornwell of Spokane.

Wagnild is a student at Valley Christian School and is the daughter of Ed and Debbie Wagnild of Spokane Valley.

Celebrity appetizer event will aid Wishing Star

On Thursday, join Wishing Star at the Coeur d'Alene Resort for the seventh annual Wishing Star Celebrity Appetizer Challenge. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will include appetizers prepared by Coeur d'Alene Resort chefs. Nine local "celebrities" have provided each chef with their favorite recipes.
